Chez Zee - review

I went to dinner here for the first time and I thought I'd write a review as I think its needed. Before I went, I was sent the websiteThe Link which lists it as the Austin Chronicle winner for BEST AMERICAN, BEST DESSERTS, BEST ROMANTIC SPOT, BEST SERVICE and BEST SOUP. My conclusion based on that information:
The chronicle's readers are the largest group of idiots ever to walk the earth.

We started with the friend pickles appetizer. Everyone who has had more than a couple of drinks downtown and made the journey to Katz's for fried pickles. Everyone knows that they are greatness in every level. These fried pickles were the worst I have ever eaten. They were sliced paper thin (hamburger style), breaded, and fried. They were so salty that among the three of us, all who love fried pickles, we left over half of the order in the basket. For the entrees, I ordered the Jalapeno-cornbread stuffed chicken breast. It was ok, but also really salty the chicken breast itself was very thin and small. One of my guests had the filet. It comes bacon wrapped and though she ordered it medium, it came well-done. She said due to the bacon and seasoning, it was also very salty. The last person at our table ordered the rotissarie chicken 1/2 chicken. This was actually a good entree, but its difficult to mess up a chicken which you spice and rotate. They ordered two deserts (I dont eat sweets) which were the Baviarian fruit (or something like that) cake and the creme brulee. The cake was not very good from what they said, but the creme brulee was excellent. The service was very good and he knew the menu and was not afraid to make suggestions. However, being that 2 of the 3 entrees were bad, none of us will be going back.

should have asked...I would have warned you. Jakob worked there during school...atmospere is great but the food always has been, and always will be subpar.

I like Chez Zee quite a bit, especially when we sit in the narrow enclosed porch just off the dining room. It's a decent "upscale casual" (?) restaurant. I really like their pasta in a jalapeno-gorgonzola cream sauce -- it's great.

I've been for dinner but it was completely unmemorable.

I have also been for brunch and it was a much different experience. I had the eggs benedict with beef tenderloin. It was fantastic. (So were the three mimosas.) My wife had the creme brulee french toast which is tasty (but a bit heavy).

I would definitely recommend this restaurant for breakfast / brunch. There are a lot of good breakfast / brunch places in Austin, but I do think this is a step above Kerbey Lane, Magnolia, etc.

As for the Chronicle poll, Chez Zee was actively soliciting for votes, going so far as to make mention of it on their table tents - "Vote for us for best dessert, etc.". I prefer word of mouth for recommendations. Or Hornfans.com.

I've probably eaten there 4 or 5 times for dinner and 3 or 4 times for brunch. The brunch is stellar. The dinner just depends on what you get. I've never left feeling disappointed. Their filet (when cooked right) is excellent. They may have solicited all the votes they got, but their desserts are pretty damn good as well. Kahlua creme pie comes to mind....damn, i'm getting hungry.

it's a great place for brunch or late night dessert...however, for dinner it is middle of the road at best.

It's never even crossed my mind to go there for dinner. I had heard it sucked as well.

I've been there for brunch about a dozen times. It's one of the best in Austin for that.
