Cheap Wine Rec Needed

I was volunteered to get the wine for our neighborhood association holiday party. 60 people. There will also be beer. So, I think 3 cases should do it. Assuming 40 people drinking wine and 5 pours per bottle, that's 4.5 glasses per wine drinker. OK. The budget is $400. I need to be looking at $10 or less per bottle. Any recommendations? I can get Barefoot wines for about $7. Not a big fan of those wines, but maybe good enough for a party. Thanks for any thoughts / suggestions.

you can usually get Yellowtail wines for that price. I don't know anyone who would complain about Yellowtail for that type event.

I second the yellowtail - especially the white, but also recommend Santa Rita Reserva. I have paid as little as $7 for a bottle at Kroger with a case discount. It's a chilean red.

Pillar Box Red, an Austrialian blend of Cab, Shiraz and Merlot, got a 91 point rating, I buy it at Costo if I am having a big party, less than $10 a bottle.

Costco has a boatload of Tin Roof for less than $10.00 a bottle it is one of the top rated wines under $10.00.....

You can get Rosenblum Zinfandel Vintners Cuvee XXIX for around $12 at World Market. It's a quality wine.

I recommend fewer bottles of better wine. The last few times I have been part of providing the alcohol for events like this, there has been lots leftover. People just don't put it away like they used to -- particularly at events like a neighborhood association holiday party. I'd go with 2 cases. And, assuming at least a 10% discount on case buys, you can go as high as $17 a bottle and still come in under budget, tax included.

I second the black box wines. ~$20 and it has the same amount as 4 750 ml bottles! it's pretty good stuff too.

BTW, have you considered the possibility of a crock pot full of gluwyne(sp?)? That **** is good, and it's really easy to make.

Smoking Loon Merlot or Winter Ridge Merlot. $7-$9 a bottle at Spec's in Houston. It's available at HEB here, too, so you should look there.

Just reporting that I ended up going to Costco and going with the Tin Roof and a Pillar Box Red, which is an Australian Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot blend that I thought would be a good contrast with the merlot. They were both just fine for the money ($7.99 and $8.99) and were great party / every day wines. Not that it matters much, but they had 90 and 91 scores on Wine Advocate. Again, thanks for the recommendations.

For future reference, check out the entire line of Sutter Home wines. I'm partial to Sutter Home Zinfandel under $6 at HEB.

Another excellent wine is Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel.

For a real treat with a kick, get Mazzocco Vineyards (Healdsburg, Ca) Cuneo and Saini old vine zinfandel. It's about $23 a bottle, but the last case I bought came in at over 16% alcohol. I'm letting it age out in my wine cellar right now.

Alice White Australian wines are good and inexpensive
