Cheap Cabin Renovation

Hogs Smell Good

25+ Posts
Alright, the wife gave me a ceiling of $5,000 to redo the cabin for the Summer. I was a little hesitant about doing anything if I couldn't do it right, but I think it's coming along pretty good.

I put down the cheapest wood laminate I could find and got Benjamin Moore paint, mixed at the mom and pop hardware store by the lake.

Here are before and after pictures (I took the after pics with the camera on my phone, so they're a little fuzzy):

We're also putting ceramic tile in all three bathrooms and refinishing the stairway. I pulled the old carpet up off the stairs, and the wood underneath is beautiful. I'm going to clean it up and tain/polyeurethane it.

If I had known I could have done all this for $5,000, I would have done it years ago.

Alright, next problem. Here is my view of the lake:

Here's the zoom, showing the wires, trees, antennae, etc:

That cabin down the hill (the red one) is my aunt and uncle (this is Ark., you know). I'm always joking with him to trim a few of those limbs and remove that antenna since he now has a dish so I can get a better view of the lake, like his view:

What's the best way to convince them to cut a few of these limbs? They're unwilling and have been since I bought the place in '01.

Wow. Well done, HSG. That flooring looks fantastic, and having a solid, muted color on the walls really allows the place to feel mellow, as a cabin should. Some nice velvet paintings on the wall would really finish out the place

.

Seriously, good work. Put up some pics of the finished bathrooms and hardwood floors, too.

Just go cut the limbs without them knowing.

They're family, they can't stay mad forever

Reasons:
The antenna is a lightning strike waiting to happen. It is an eyesore.

Too bad the trees look like oak in the closeup. At first I thought they were cottonwood. Cottonwood gets very brittle from the borers that eat through them. They drop huge branches.

You could argue they trees will damage the shingles on his house and make him have to put on a new roof.
