Chanting USA is racist

Who knew or would ever think that chanting
USA USA in, well the USA could be seen as racist.

Aren't USA initials for a Nation, not a race?

The San Antonio Independent School District has filed a complaint with the UIL regarding the behavior of a group of Alamo Heights High School students after the Mules' victory over Edison in the Region IV-4A boys basketball final Saturday, SAISD athletic director Gil Garza said Tuesday.

The Alamo Heights students chanted "USA, USA, USA" after the Mules were presented the championship trophy at Littleton Gym."

I guess some people look for boogeymen everywhere and can see things as they want to see them

If this was done with no provokation just to make this a U.S. win over a "Mexican" team, that's out of line. Having said that, I'd be very curious if their fans are doing something to bring this out. If their fans were there waving Mexican flags and making it seem like a U.S. versus Mexico match, then I wouldn't have as much an issue. But I doubt that was the case.

I grew up in SA- I went to Churchill and our school played both Edison and Alamo Heights at times. Let me tell you- I chant USA at soccer games etc when the USA plays another country. I love the chant when it's country vs. country.

If someone chanted this at an Alamo Heights game vs. Edison, it's very clear this is not about pride in America. Edison is about 90% Hispanic- and it clearly was about something else.

Chanting USA for a patriotic reason is great. Chanting it to imply that another group of high schoolers is less American than you is one of the least patriotic things I can think of.

Normally I hate the PC police, but, this is pretty obviously racially motivated. Both teams are from the USA, so why would students chant USA? Alamo Heights has always been the rich white enclave and the kids that grow up there are usually obnoxious snobs.

Frankly, I'm not so much surprised that rich white Alamo Heights kids would try to rub in a victory over some poor Hispanics, but that rich white kids actually won a sporting event. They probably just aren't used to winning

I went to Westlake. This is the kind of stupid **** that got us in trouble, or made us hated by schools that weren't 100% white or Asian. I'm as conservative as you get. Hate really all things "PC.". But this is kids acting in an incredible provocative fashion.

I also find it interesting that, if the coach and parents did indeed put a stop to this ********, that the Hispanic superintendent still felt the need to file a complaint. He really seems to wanna publicize this, needlessly.

Edit: the SAISD A.D.

Kids being stupid. Ill never forget watching the Ghana vs. US world cup game two summers ago and a group of Mexicans sitting at the other table cheering when Ghana scored.

Game was played March 3 during the anniversary of the battle of the Alamo. Edison fans were yelling "Alamo Whites" prior and during the game. This is an example of the class of Alamo Heights doing the right thing, and SAISD having no class and doing the wrong thing. Not admitting or apologizing for the racist/ethnic chants of the Edison fans and then filing a compaint with the UIL against Alamo Heights in the hopes af advancing in the palyoffs over a team that just kicked their ***. Difference in the class of people running the schools and school systems. The Edison team did not work any harder than the Alamo Heights team to get where they are in the season.

Despite what the media wants you to think there is no Mexican race. In fact there are only a handful of races and Spanish heritage, which all Mexicans are except those from Indian decent, would be considered Caucasian. But everyone here already knew that, it's just more fun to blow things way out of proportion.

This might not have been the nicest chant the school has heard, but this is absolutely not racism. We as a society are too quick to throw that label on anything that makes us feel uncomfortable.

dheiman,

I can't tell from your post on semantics where you stand on the use of the chant in this case. Do you find fault with it?

"Returning racism with racism is the right thing? Makes sense to me "

Doing the right thing was AH stopping the chant, apologizing if offense was taken(probably wasn't especially since the Edison team was in the locker room) and counseling the students involved. Doing the wrong thing was Edison not stopping their racist/ethnic/offensive yells and chants, which were shouted at the AH team and fans and not apologizing to AH. SAISD then ignored their own offensive sctions in order to parlay a pervieved slight by AH into an advance in the playoffs. AH showed class and did the right thing, SAISD and Edison showed it's total lack of class and took the wrong action by ignoring their own offensive behavior.

"And besides, why would Alamo Heights be offended by Alamo Whites? The city is 95% white, and they usually take pride in that. "

I am assuming, by your comment, since Edison is probably 95% Hispanic and proud of their heritage they wouldn't be offended with a chant of "Edison Mexicans" ??

Roma, there are numerous reports including from students of the other team that this was racist and I was pointing out that it is in fact not an act of racism.

The report also says that students began the chant and the coach of the winning team immediately put a stop to it. Do I condone the student's action, no. Are we (collectively) way too sensitive, yes. How is this any different than fans in professional stadiums badmouthing opponents? Because they are high schoolers? We shouldn't be surprised that immature teenagers tried to provoke another school. Maybe everyone would feel better if they chanted, "you suck losers". Because there is no opportunity for ethnic comparisons, is that somehow more morally correct?

It was mean and insensitive, but they will deal with much worse in their lives.

So they were chanting USA while playing another American high school? That is just downright embarrassing. I am embarrassed for those bigoted high school students. I do not think there should be any official sanction against them. They only deserve our pity. Truly pathetic.

I got nothing other than to say my Dad went to Edison...

It wasn't 95% Hispanic then, though...

Oh yeah, and Churchill sucks...

Apparently yes, "alamo whites" was being chanted by some Edison students as reported by a San Antonio writer.

I already thought this was blown out of proportion but for high school kids being provoked, this could have gone a lot worse.

My mom went to Edison back in the day. This is not about race, this is about the Golden Bears trying to advance in the playoffs. Also F*** Alamo Heights!
