Changes?

I start off by admitting im not a bb guru either mens or womens but i do follow anything burnt orange. An article on Gail not long after her hire really impressed me. Her values, her work ethics reminds me allot of a female version of Mack. But with this said this upcoming season is all Gail. Her players, her time and with this do you see any changes coming? I hate to say it but the pressure is going to be on her next season and im just curious to see how she responds. As funny as this may seem it reminds me allot of Macks situation right before the 2005 season. I hope the best for her and the lady longhorns in the upcoming season. And as always HOOKEM

I disagree about next year. WBBNUT nailed it in a previous post - it takes YEARS to recruit the players you really want - as NUT mentioned, you start watching them and cultivating a relationship as maybe a freshman in HS or maybe even in middle school. You nurture that relationship and hopefully, can sign them. Coach G has not had that time to recruit ALL of Texas - yes she's cherry picked while at Duke, but only the top top players and her relationships were for Duke, not Texas. It will take some time to get that kind of process here at Texas. So, although all the players next year may be her recruits, they are not really HER recruits, if you get my drift.

Nicely said Rexy. I don't think there will be any changes. IMHO it's like changing a whole culture of the way things use to be done and that takes time. Yes I want improvement and championships NOW! But unfortunately probably in the 5 - 10 year mark we'll see some great improvement. And if we let her go WHO do we hire next?

I don't think TX will be in the polls next year if they don't show more improvement. I don't think her name will be enough to put us in the polls without significant strides of improvement and a few good wins over ranked opponents.

To our new recruits if you are reading this GGs not going anywhere but SHOOT, SHOOT, SHOOT. Practice on all of your shooting moves this summer - begin to master your offensive game. We need gamers and if you can BRING IT believe me you will start and get time on the court. But GG is serious about defense - master her defensive moves and schemes quickly. She is a defensive coach and will ride you until you learn it - so pay attention and learn it - MASTER IT!! Match this with your offensive skill set and you will be good to go.

Well said Cynt! And I don't mean to imply that the players GG has now and has recruited thus far, are players she doesn't want - I don't mean that at all. I mean that the process of recruiting players takes YEARS, and she's only been here 3 years, which is not nearly enough time to establish and nurture relationships with ALL the players she wants (or will get in the future)!

Thanks for the mention Rexy.

If we can all be patient and turn out to support the progam, I suspect we'll see a final four appearance in the next four years. I really do. And I happen to know that is the thinking from within the program as well. Personally, I'd be happy with a Sweet 16 or an Elite 8, but a Final Four would be... well it wouldn't suck.

We fans have a role to play as well. The women will play better in front of a larger crowd. I have taken my regular two tickets each season and turned them into four. We need to fill the drum... BEAT THE DRUM for our Horns.

Well, not to rain on this or anything, but Kat and Kristen are not Coach G’s recruits. They were recruited and signed by Coach Conradt. They are the last players on the roster signed by Coach Conradt.

Another thing to remember, the last two seasons that she has been able to recruit full time (her first summer was spend with one of the USA teams), she has gotten a top five recruit (Cokie) and a top 20 recruit (Moore) per Hoopgurlz. IIRC, Bass was a top 15 recruit by one of the other recruiting reports. She is just starting to establish herself and Texas together as a player in Texas HS hoops. I’m hopeful that many of the Texas exes in HS coaching will also let the Texas staff know when they have a player that needs to be looked at.

Three of the four coming in are pretty strong defensively. They will have to get strong, gain endurance and learn the system on both ends. But the opportunity for plenty of playing time is available for all four. I am expecting big contributions from all, maybe too much.

Cokie’s ability to play 25-30 minutes a half without getting in foul trouble would give Coach G the option of starting/playing both Cokie and Ashley together with Kristen and Anne Marie as backups. If Cokie is unable to stay out of foul trouble, Kristen or Anne Marie could end up starting, depending on what happens at the backcourt and wing positions.

My hope for the guards and wings is working on ball control and passing under duress. That was a major weakness this season and our returning players need to work on that as well as our freshmen.

I love the potential in Ashley, Cokie, Kristen and Anne Marie in the frontcourt. I hope to see the fire I saw from Ashley at times in the SDSU game all the time.

Next year will good for Texas. So I am real excited! I agree with BabHorn about the fans supporting the ladys! Fresh blood will bring new energy. I love when you bring in good freshmans. T.Moore,C.Bass,C.Fussell,A.Hartung will give Texas a big lift.If you really follow womens basketball, you will know.Passing,Shooting,Defense, Rebounding and Effort will be much better next year.A lot of you all will be surprise AT THE TEAM NEXT YEAR.

Don't see how this "wait til next year" is refusing to realistical. The team taking the floor has improved every year. Have they reached the lofty expectations of many? No, but they continue to get better and improve. So, yeah, wait til next year. It's a new team with new players and expectations from both the staff and players to reach further next year than they got this year. This season the main cause for disillusionment that I can see is the failure to get past game one of the NCAAs. Wait til next year when the team is in that position once again. I expect they will be raring to blow past that two season sticking point.

Sooooo I guess there were a lot of people at Nebraska last year that sounded lot like we do right now. OK. I can live with that.

We beat Baylor twice. Baylor just beat #1 seed Tennessee to advance to the Elite Eight. We underachieved. Meanwhile, Brittney Griner is gaining confidence and experience and will be a monster the next three years. Our team is watching on TV. Coach G has her work cut out for her.

IMO, next year will still not show the results we all want. We are losing 3 players with a lot of skills and experience. Of our 4 incoming freshmen, we should be realistic and not assume they can step right in and replace what we lose in Brittainey, Erika, and Earnesia.

Lauren's injury is certainly a downer. She starter this past season nicked up, and ended with a major injury. Some players have bad luck with injuries, but I hope Lauren can find confidence and success next season, but I can't expect it based on how long the rehab process takes, and how late in the season her injury occurred.

So, we really will have a roster of 10 players again, and I've said it so many times, but that just isn't enough when we have 15 'ships to give, and A&M and Baylor are using everyone of their 15 allowable ships.

The 10 player roster is not ideal, nor is it what, based on her history at Duke, what Coach G prefers. 12 players allows for possible injuries and still allows for PT for all players. If the staff had one or two of the players offered accept, our roster next season would be 12-13 players, not 11.

I agree with Moo that Lauren is iffy for next season, given how later it was when she had surgery. I wouldn't be surprised to see her redshirt. But others have come back in six months from that type of injury, so it depends on the player's ability to heal.

We lose a lot in Earnie, Brit and Erika. But the four players coming in bring in quite a bit. We gain two outstanding defenders in the backcourt. All three guards are scorers who are able to pass well. We gain height, shot blocking and rebounding inside. We do lose experience, no way around that. We'll find out if youthful energy can compensate for that.

Yeah, Bab, look where "youthful energy" got Baylor!!

I'm just glad our Coach does not dress like a hooker, and does not act like a Pom-Pom girl on the sideline....
