Chainsaw?

I'm thinking of getting a light chainsaw to use around the house. Our yard is a little overgrown and I'm planning on taking down a couple of small trees and several shrubs.

Anyone have recommendations on brand, electric vs gas, bar size, etc?

I'd suggest a 110V electric one for light duty use. Small gas engines can be a pain if they don't get used regularly. I have an electric Poulan and it's been more than adequate around the yard. I've used it on oak branches at least 8 or 10" in diameter and it worked fine. I think it was less than $100 at HD or Lowes.

My initial thought was that electric was the way to go but I'd like to hear about the disadvantages as well. Thanks for the reply.

Let me add that I have a gas chain saw, too. I bought the electric one when the gas one wouldn't start and I didn't have time to try to get it running. The only disadvantage to electric is you have to stay clear of the cord which isn't too hard. And, add the cost of getting a heavy duty 12 gauge extension cord if you don't own one.

Years ago I had a large yard and had all gas-powered tools since cords were impractical. I eventually got tired of keeping them all running and now that I have a smaller yard I go electric whenever possible. Much better. Also, small gas engines are a major contributor to air pollution.

Just to be clear, I'm going to use this to clean up my yard and that's about it. We have a gas fireplace so I'll never use it for firewood and I don't have any other property. No need to over spend.

Keep the suggestions coming.

While I am a Stihl fan, you need nothing more than an electric chain saw for your needs. Go to HD and buy what's on sale.

I have an Echo gas chainsaw, primarily for clearing cedar and other assorted brush, but if I was only using it around the house I would go electric both for ease of startup and I think they are generally lighter.

I have a small echo. I love it and it allows me to go to my brother in law or father in laws or the deer lease and cut wood as well.

Whatever you get - get a case for it or with it. it is a pain to find one afterwards.

If anyone knows where I can get a small chainsaw case let me know.

no rec's for craftsman? i'm looking for a 16-18" to use 2-3 times per year for firewood stacking at the deer lease. in the $150-200 range those seem to be the best bet and i have always had great luck with craftsman products. no dice on the chainsaws?
