Central Florida (Lakeland)

My father and I are going to Lakeland, Florida over Spring Break for the first time. We will be going there to watch baseball, primarily, but in the down time I was wondering what y'all would recommend? Specifically, we are hacks on the links but would enjoy any recommendations some of y'all might have. I am a history buff and I thought going to St.Augustine might be worth the side trip. Any thoughts? Not really interested in Disney, though. thanks for any advice.
