Cell Phone for Europe

Don't rent one. It's a rip off. Just go to carphone warehouse (UK) and pick up a pay as you go phone. You can usually get a basic phone for about £20 with airtime included. You can then just top it up. Ask if the phone is unlocked and you can then get a SIM in spain. Alternatively, you could just bring your phone from the USA and see if you can get a SIM card here to work in it, if it's unlocked. The nice thing in the UK is that if someone calls you, it does not use up your minutes.

i'll be there for 17 days, but i'm going with a bunch of family and also want to keep up with friends travelling at the same time. i wonder if i can just get an unlocked phone here and pick up a sim wherever i end up.

yes you can. if you are with t-mobile or att/cing right now, you could just get a local shop (one that has multiple carriers, not a corporate store) to unlock your current phone and that would probably be under $20.

I usually bring my T-Mobile phone and just make sure the company knows I'll be in Europe or wherever. The per minute fees are high but I pretty much bring it just for emergencies.

I did that in April. It is pricey at $0.99/min, but it came in handy a few times. If your plan is communication with a group that will also be over and have local prepaid numbers like you, then an unlocked phone and prepaid SIM is the best bet by far.

a lot of good suggestions here. I would second what London said.

This topic is why I am so happy to be with TMoblie for when I head across the pond.

I agree Loopy. I have Cingular. My phone works most everywhere I go. I just use it like normal. Prices are reasonable. For the original poster though, if he doesn't have the same setup ... London had a good suggestion.
