Ceiling Fans

I have 3 Casablanca fans. They have been good for over 5 years. Hunter is supposed to be good too.

JM, check out Habitat for Humanity first. We bought a couple of nice iron & wood fans (Hunter? can't remember) for $60 each. New.

A lot of folks don't realize that HfH sells new products, but they do.

Casablanca makes some great fans, but they are very pricey. Hunter does too. I have a couple of Hunters from HD. The same fan from a dealer was more than twice the price, but they do have a lifetime warranty.

Hampton Bay is rated well by CR and we have one of theirs that has been going for 7 years without a hitch.

Check out the mounting system of the fans. I am sort of assuming you might have existing fans you are replacing.

Some of the new hunters are awesome as far an the "non-wobble' factor. however they ahve a completely different mounting method than the traditional variety, I love the new fans i bought from home depot but the mount was non traditional and while it doesn't wobble it was sort o a pain the first one.

I don't think i will ever buy anything that is not a Hunter. Hampton Bay is okay but there is just something about my Hunters that seem better. I love them.

We've been replacing our ceiling fans w/ Hunters, too. I've seen some Kichler fans at Lowe's that look quite nice and are a bit more expensive than Hunter, but I don't know enough about them to install one in my own home. Heard great things about Casablancas but they are gonna cost you plenty.

Stay away from the cheapo brands/models. They won't do a very good job of moving the air, they'll wobble, and they'll be loud as hell which --if you're like me-- will drive you nuts. I can't sleep in a room w/ a noisy fan.

Whichever one you chose I highly recommend getting one w/ a remote control (or buying a remote separately--about $30-- which is a pretty easy installation unless you're an electrical idiot). I wouldn't put a remote controllable fan in every room in the house, but the master bedroom & living/family rooms should definitely have one.

Definitely go with Hunter. You'll be glad you did. And while a regular dimmer switch may seem like a nice idea to contol the speed of the fan (you will see this quite often), the electrical resisance makes the fan "hum" especially the slower you make it go (more resistance). It makes for a noisy night's sleep or a distraction while watching a movie. Just put it on a toggle switch and use the pull string to control the speed and the fan will be silent.

For those with fans, you can add a remote control to any existing fan, just about. A friend has one on his living room fan, I covet it now. But my ceilings are not too high so the pull cord works. But when I build my next house in a couple years or so, bank on there being remote control fans.

The cast iron Hunter is the best but it is not easy to mount. You have to insert a big *** hook in a stud, and then hang it. I think it weighs about 50 pounds.

Hampton Bay is kind of cheaply made, but you can get one up in about 5 minutes. Just depends on how long you are going to be living there.

be sure to check their HD's little clearance section. they all have them. i'm not sure if they hvae the brands recommended here, but there are ALWAYS shitloads of cieling fans in that section for dirt cheap.
