Ceiling Fan Noise

I have four ceiling fans in my house, all installed by the previous owner. Each one has its own noise. One buzzes when you turn it on, one makes a clicking sound, two hum. These are all newer (5-7 yr-old, I'm guessing), "maintenance free" with no holes for squirting grease!

1. Can I stop the noise myself?
2. How? (Other than leaving them off, I know)
3. Who works on ceiling fans?

clicking noise - might be one of the chains clicking as the fan wobbles banging against the main housing. The other is the possibility is that one of your bearings is no longer round and that is causing the clicking.

The "humming" might be solved by double checking your connections. But more likely is just the motot unit itself. Try moving the fan up to a higher speed and see if that doesn't help.

Who repairs fans? odds are the cost of replacement unless you have high end Hunter fans is about the same as service costs might be.

Regarding the humming, is the wall switch a dimmer or a toggle? Dimmer switches cause your fan to make a lot of humming noise especially the more resistance (slower) you make the fan run. If that is the case, I would replace the dimmer switch with an on/off toggle switch and just use the pull chain to regulate the speed of the fan.

Go buy a cast iron Hunter and all noise will vanish.

Those Hampton Bay fans they sell at Home Depot suck balls. I put one in my downstairs bedroom and it is very loud. At least it is white noise loud, and I don't have to sleep in that room.

Sometimes they are out of balance-do they wobble while rotating? You can try to balance it by taping a nickel to one of the blades and seeing if it is better or worse, then changing the weight to the next blade until it turns more smoothly. Might help-but cheap ceiling fans are noiser than better ones-as pointed out above.

accurate is right, If you don't want to tape a nickel, Lowe's sells the weight clips to put on your fan for balancing.
