Cedar planks for grilling?

My mom saw an ad for these and thought my dad might like some for father's day. Their just planks of cedar that you soak in water then put on the grill. You cook fish or whatever on top of the wood, and it's supposed to give it a smokey flavor.

Anybody tried this or heard anything about it?

yeah, it's good for salmon. the indians used this method to cook their fish. i've never done chicken or steak, but the salmon turns out really well.

good luck.

My fence guy is selling spruce versions, but they are pricey and you have to wait 3-4 weeks. Let me know if you want his information.

I do it all the time. Go to the Home Depot and buy untreated cedar fence boards. Buy a salmon filet, skin on. With a hand saw cut the fence post to the length of the filet. Soak the sawed piece of cedar in water for 30 minutes. Light a fire on your grill and let the coals get white. Place the salmon filet skin side down on the cedar. Take 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup soy sauce, 1/2 cup water and mix together in a sauce pan and heat at low tempature until sugar is melted. Rub the fish with some brown sugar ( about a quarter cup). Place the cedar over the coals and baste the fish with the liquid from the sauce pan. Cover the grill and cook five minutes. Lift top and baste again, then recover the grill for five minutes. Repeat one more time.

pappa's seafood has cedar-plank salmon with asparagus (off menu item) - it's fantastic! get the planks.

Just keep in mind that my experience is that a plank lasts about three cooks. Home Depot or Lowes is the way to go, but by all means, make sure they're untreated. Otherwise, Central Market and Williams Sonoma carry them, as do many barbecue stores.
