Texas receiver Cayleb Jones has been charged with aggravated assault - a second-degree felony - after throwing a punch and fracturing the jaw of Texas tennis player Joey Swaysland at a bar on East Sixth Street at 1:50 am on Feb. 22, according to Austin Police Department Corporal Anthony Hipolito.
According to the police, Jones saw Swaysland talking to Texas volleyball player Katherine Bell, someone Jones had dated in the past, became angry and punched Swaysland, who did not see the punch coming.
Swaysland, an international student from Australia, has been sidelined from the Texas tennis team after having surgery to repair his fractured jaw.
Bell told police her relationship with Jones ended on bad terms and that he had been jealous ever since and has anger issues, according to the police report.
After the incident, according to the police report, both Jones and Bell went to Texas football strength and conditioning coach Bennie Wylie for advice. Wylie gave a sworn statement to police that Jones admitted to punching Swaysland.
In Wylie's statement, he told Jones to talk to his family and to obtain an attorney, the police report said. Wylie told Bell to talk to her coach (Jerritt Elliott), the report said.
