Caves

Anyone know of any good caves/caverns in the Austin area that you can just go casually exploring for a couple of hours? Everything I've found you have to make a big ordeal of and set up cave training beforehand or get a guide from Austin Parks & Wildlife or whanot.

Back in the early 80's I lived off of Brodie Lane in South Austin. There were 2 caves in walking distance, Goat and one unnamed at the time, might be known as "Maple Run" now since that was the subdivision I lived in. Also Whirlpool is off of Brodie and Mopac. We went in to each of them but never very far. Goat Cave had a ladder in it so you could get down.

Be sure to go alone & don't tell anyone where you're going for the day.

Oh, & use really old batteries in your flashlight.

The training & buddy requirements are there for a reason...

There is nothing of any decent size in and around Austin that would be open for "casual" exploring. Work with the UT grotto to set up some trips and that will help insure your safety.
