Cat

I know, it's off topic, but wanted those of you who might not frequent the other boards to see this since the event is almost upon us. I did not know it until a few minutes ago, but Cat has come out of retirement for the Olympics, and she is pitching (at age 38!! believe it or not--time flies) tonight at 8 pm central against arch rival Japan on the USA TV network. Monica is also on the US team--I guess no new pitchers have come along in the intervening years that are as good as these two were (still are). . . . Well, shucks, Cat did not start the game. They led me astray. Cat is 2-0 so far in the tournament.

Actually, Cat pitched the game before last against Mexico. Then Abbott pitched the last game against Australia

Wow, Japan just made a great double play off a bunt. First baseman ran in to field it; threw it to short stop covering second; who threw it to the second baseman covering first.

Cat's in briefly in relief. Trailing 0-1. U.S. does not have a hit yet. . . .She only faces two batters (both lefties) --strikes out the first batter looking . . second batter strikes out swinging.

USA finally gets a run in the bottom of the sixth. Abbott comes in to stifle Japan in the top of the seventh. And then the USA gets a homer to win the game 2-1.

The announcers are saying they think Abbott will start, but Cat probably will see action because it's all or nothing for the team.

Dang it, just now saw this - and I was actually awake at 6am for once (toddler woke up early in a bad mood and none of us could fall back asleep even after he calmed down :/ ).

Recorded it and just now started watching. Cat gets the start. Yes! First batter hits line drive right at Cat. She knocks it down, but can't throw runner out. Next batter works Cat to 3-2, and then sacrifices runner to second with ground slap to third. Another ground out to third, but runner moves from second to third. Two out. Japanese power hitter up. Whew--barely foul ball just misses being safe down third base line. Whew again, slow roller to shortstop--barely throws out runner at first to end the inning. Not a typical Cat inning--everybody got a bat on the ball.

Second batter up for U.S. hits a one out triple to right center fence . . shucks runner thrown out at plate on ball that got past catcher. Another passed ball-runner goes to second. Another passed ball--runner to third. Strike out. No runs after we had two runners make it to third. I thought Cat's start was shaky, but Japan's start was even shakier.

In second inning, Japan gets a double off the wall against Cat. This ain't Cat's night. I predict she is not long for this game. Next batter flies out. Next batter flies out, but deep at the wall. Inning over. Whew. Cat makes it through another inning but really needs to find her stuff. No strike outs so far.

We have one on (by a walk) with one out in the second. Another great double play by Japan to end the inning--pitcher to second to first. Cat walks first batter in next inning, and we have a pitching change. Frankly, I'm relieved. She was not in good form today (and, in softball, she can come back in later). . . . Jeez, we barely made it out of that inning again--sharp grounder between first and second with two on and two out--fielder barely gets it to first in time to get the batter. . . . another scoreless inning follows for us. zip zip after three

This puppy is over--Abbott finally comes in and allows a run after a wild pitch allows runner to go from first to second, and then a solid single to right center scores that runner. No magic for us today, I fear.

The US coach was out maneuvered by the Japanese coach by overloading his line-up with right handed hitters effectively nullifying the strength of the US pitching staff. Cat pitched great.
