Castillion or Towers?

Towers wasnt built yet as it is now when i was in school. i lived at castillion my freshman year and had a good time but i think towers is better according to some of my cousins that stayed there. towers is probably more expensive but i dont know.

What year is this? What about all those other places that have been built in West Campus in the past 5 years? Are none of those able to stack up to old-school Towers or Castillion?

My impression of the two when I was in school (98-02) was that Castillian people partied significantly harder.

I lived at Towers. I wasn't in a frat and basically sat in my dorm 'suite' the entire year and met about no one. My non-frat friends that lived in Castillion met a ton of people that they are life long friends with to this day. At Castillion you have to get out of your room or you will go crazy. Towers is a labyrinth that you can get lost in and never see a soul.

If I could do it over again I'd live in Hardin House.

yeah, i would say that if you are not in a frat to stay at castillion or even on campus. there may be some new nice dorms on campus that i havent heard of. is the woo still open? that place was historically nasty but fun.

I lived at the Castillian and it was great becasue Mad Dogs & Beans was across the street, but I would be no help now as that was in 79-80.

I lived in both. Tower when it was known as Tri-Towers and was a dump. It got better after I left (Hey! wait a minute....)
I lived at the Castilian in the late 80's. At the time, it was the
off-campus dorm -- proximity to campus, , decent food, good amenities, and wall-to-wall carpet. Awesome, awesome, floor coverings. I'd never seen so much. Ahem... It was good for deadening the sound for study hours.

Now? Haven't heard how the places have kept up with the times. Tri-towers went into the tank in fairly quick order and required a complete re-do.

I'd imagine that the Castilian management has been more on-top of renovations.

Maybe living North Campus is the thing nowadays. Back in "the day", it was the WC.

I lived in Castilian-

1) Castilian is closer, much closer- and that means a lot when you come to and fro 2 or 4x/day.

2) As others said- it is more social. You have to socialize in the hallways if you have a pulse.

3) The food was awesome- and I bet it still is.

4) The views on both side are amazing- and I'll never forget them.

5) Roof top sun bathing when Spring arrives- wow, just wow!

6) My friends at Towers didn't like their food, their location or the social scene

I lived at Dobie Center my freshman year, '98, and loved it. I think most compare it to Castillion where the rooms are fairly small so you want to get out. Very close to campus like Castillion so I would recommend looking at Dobie as well. However my roommate my soph.-senior year lived at Towers his freshman year and loved it. He wasn't in a frat but knew a handful of friends that lived there as well.

I would definitely say if you're looking for a more social life...go with Castillion or Dobie. More room to cook up yourself and live like an off-campus apartment, go with Towers.

I lived at Castillian my fresh year (93)....I loved it.

I think at that time socially they were about the same at least seemed so to me. I had friends that lived in both. I think the big difference was the food options at Castillian were much better than at Towers.

and yes being right behind the Drag/Tower records and across from Mad Dog's didn't hurt either.

and across from Mad Dog's didn't hurt either.

the closing of that place represents for me the change from old school austin to the new trendy place it has become, that and the move of antones to downtown. someone needs to open up an another mad dogs and a gm steakhouse for that matter, including the rude and sour staff.

lived in Castillian 1979 - 81.

First thing that we did after moving in was go to Mad Dogs to eat....a great decision....it was so Austin and great

I was attending a summer camp hosted by UT one summer and they decided to put a bunch of HS kids in the Castillian. Best time I ever had as a 15 or 16 y/o.

I lived in Towers my freshman year, and my brother lived in Castillan. I will point out a few obvious differences with the set ups. Some have already pointed out that Castillian is closer to campus, which is nice bonus, and the food a Castillian is supposed to be the best of any dorm in the UT area. My brother had a couple of problems at Castillian though. 1) his car didn't fit in the parking garage. He drove a Bronco from the eary 90s and it was too tall, so he had to find other parking arrangements. That was a major pain for him. 2) He went pot luck on his roommate who was a bad roomate. The rooms at Castillian are pretty much standard size. They are smaller even than some of the older dorms on campus. So if size in a room is something you desire, then Castillian is NOT your place. The reason some have pointed out it is more social is because the rooms don't have living areas of their own, which forces you to get out to be some place. That is what I know about Castillian.
In Towers, I lived in a 2 bedroom, where I knew my roommate and one other occupant. So I only had one pot luck roommate, who turned out to be pretty cool. Obviously, we had our own living room, dining area, kitchenette, and 2 balconies. MUCH MUCH MUCH more room than Castillian. The closets in Towers are MASSIVE. Also, the bathrooms are paritioned. The double sink area is open, with a throne room at one end, and a shower at the other. Therefore, the shower and toilet area were seperate, which was pretty nice. The food was decent. Decent selection, and they ad a grill. Grilled to order food, which is what I ate quite a bit. Our hall was pretty social and we got to know a few people on the hallway, but it was not as social as Castillian We did have our own bedrooms where we could get away from late night video playing roommates, etc. A roommate could have some guys over to play video games out in the living area, and you could get some sleep or study if you wanted no poblem. Big bonus in my book. Also, I was driving a 2 door GMC Yukon and it fit in the parking garage, which was great. It was not under, but is right across the street from the dorm.
Now, I don't know if you are looking for a guy or gal for freshman, but I also worked at SRD and my sister lived there her first 2 years in school. It is also very close, has open parking (as in not covere), and the food and rooms are nice. There is of course the fact that it is all girl, and I really can't comment in living in a single gendered situation. I think that North campus, and the locationof SRD is great though. Really just as close as Castillian and a bit more upscale and protective. There are visiting hours that are fairly strict, or where in the mid 90s when I was there. My sister obviously liked it enough to live there a second year.
