Finally tried CEC on Saturday, and here is my review:
GOT DAMN, that is a tasty burger!
I was told to expect Surly Joe behind the window, and he didn't disappoint. He absolutely laid into one dude who came back to ask how much longer it would be. He was fine with me because I just ordered, paid, and went back to the bar. It ain't for those in a hurry. Despite only 3 orders ahead of me, he said it would be about 45 minutes, and it actually took about 35. Luckily they were showing The Big Lebowski so I watched it and drained a couple of Shiners while it was cooking up. Then the burger was ready.
Big doesn't do it justice: the huge patty was cooked perfectly, covered in sweet grilled onions and a tangy BBQ sauce. They cooked it medium by default, and it was actually somewhere between medium and medium rare, which was ideal. It was really juicy, I mean this is a 3/4 pound patty, and the last tiny bit of my bun was pink and a bit soggy. Of course, I gobbled it up like everything else. Fries were decent, but they're just decoration for the burger. Seven bucks for the burger and fries.
It's very dark in there, and I was about blinded coming back out into daylight. Everyone except the cook was very cool, from bartender to clientele. I'm thinking that they intentionally have the cook be a hardass to add to the "atmosphere" but I could be mistaken.
I ate it around 4:30, and didn't eat anything else the whole night. Beautiful. It easily wins my vote for best burger in Austin, and I'm kicking myself for not trying one before.
