Casey Thompson vs Colorado

The shake and bake to avoid the sack then hit Brewer was fantastic. The "hands up don't shoot" block he gave was hilarious but effective too.

If Sam wasn't hurt no reason to bench him. Casey looked great so I'll give him that. He's the starter going into the season.
Could not disagree more unless you want unnecessary losses or no improvement. If the QB or any player is underperforming it is the responsibility of the coach to give the next man up a chance. If Belicheck thought like this, who knows what would have happened with Brady as he was backing up an above average QB. Who knows, if Brown pulls Simms when he should have...

Sam never played so poor this season that I'd have benched him IMO.

To be fair, I never seen a single practice. I have no idea if Thompson played the game of his life (I hope not) or if this is how he normally plays. I hope not playing Thompson will be another reason we bash Herman going forward although obviously we do not need more reasons.

I understand why coaches can be loyal to a fault for certain players but I would resist that temptation. If you have another faster quicker better arm you gotta give him the opportunity to see what he can do. It's not that Sam has to play poorly is that you have to put in the better player.

As good as Casey looked against Colorado I understand thinking he would have been that good all year but which games and when would you have pulled Sam?

I listed OU, TCU, and WVU above just because I remember stretches of awful QB play during those games and yelling at Herman (through the TV, he did not listen) to give someone else a chance. I do not recall the exact moments in those games. OU beat us and hell they pulled their QB for one or two series. Perhaps you are thinking I am saying that Sam should have been pulled and never put back in. No that is not what I am saying. I am saying do what OU did with Ratler against us give the backup a chance to see what he can or can not do.

Yeah

I was just about to bring up Riley doing it and I agree there are a couple of times it was warranted. All the great coaches do this^^^^ kind of hard stuff to get the most out if their guys and team. Average coahes play it safe and worry too much about what if they're wrong...

Well watching Casey versus Colorado I get it but if you were clamoring for it during those games then you knew more about Casey at the time than I did. Sam did have some bad plays but as a successful four year starter I never thought about pulling him unless he was genuinely hurt. I can respect your position.

I went to the game and opine the Colorado defense may only be a twitch better than the UTEP defense. Colorado’s defense was just plain bad.
The point being no one should crown Thompson the starting QB based on 1/2 of a football game against a terrible defense.
I predict Card will be the starter in 2021. He is just a better QB.

Casey looked real good in a live college game against an opponent. We haven’t seen Hudson enough in that sort of situation yet. Hudson may, or may not, have what it takes to beat Casey out. We just don’t know yet. But we’ll find out.

I always heard that the reason Mack started Simms over Applewhite was because Simms was always the better QB in practice.
That doesn't always translate to the live game.

I think everyone on the field should be held to a level of accountability and if they are not reaching that level for whatever reason, one or two series on the bench is warranted. I don't subscribe to the idea that certain players are not benchable (yes Tom Brady and a few others are exceptions to this rule). Nothing sends the message of accountability greater than benching a star player when his effort or results are not what they should be. Not to highjack the thread, but I also think the backup QB should get some meaningful snaps throughout the year (again games the magnitude of OU would be an exception unless the starter is not performing) and not just a few snaps in garbage time. Thompson's level of play was incredible considering how little he has played for 2 years.

I must caution.

Anyone remember the QB who played against FeCal about 5 years ago. I don't remember his name and for good reason. He put up about 500 yards of offense on them.

We thought we had our next great QB, anyone remember what happened after that? He sucked *** and we ended up using a TE as our QB.

I believe in Thompson, I think he has some talent, but I'm still going to be cautious in my expectations. Thompson has talent for sure, but it is still untested. Colorado came into that game thinking they had to defend Ehlinger and stopping a new QB you haven't seen or prepared for can throw the defense off and make the QB look much better than he really is.

I love Thompson, I recognized his talent back 2 years ago when I went to the Spring game. He has ability, but he isn't a sure thing.

Ahhh, completely agree on the spring game assessment and how much would we all long for a “sure thing”. In fact wasn’t there an idiotic youth flick movie about that?

Failure to get the backup QBs meaningful snaps (e.g., where they pass the ball) has been a recurring problem with our program since the Mack Brown years.

Who out there is regularly playing the backup QB just for sake of playing the backup QB in close games against quality opposition, other than teams who honestly don't know who their #1 starter even is?
