I would like to see a documentary type movie about Blue Chip football players and how often they don't pan out, how often they don't play for long and for sure how often they don't make it to the NFL. It's stunning and actually quite sad. These kids get told how awesome they are for much of their formative years, they are studs in HS in ways we cannot fathom and so often don't make it with not much in the way of a safety net or back up plan.
A good HS QB with quality HS coaching, and later really good college coaching in a system designed to develop his talents will prosper.
Conversely, a great HS QB, who does NOT receive good college coaching may never prosper. Since we unfortunately don't have to look very far for examples, I shall give you some that did not walk through Austin:
Brandon Stewart - perhaps the best HS QB I ever saw. He beat out Peyton Manning to start at Tennesse when both were freshman. Transferred to A&M and is an afterthought.
Jeff Granger - What an incredible talent both in football and baseball.
Mike Mosley - OK, that wasn't a "coaching" problem.
ND and USC have a list longer than your arm.
We have failed to take some of the best HS QBs and develop them into great college players, but we are not alone.
He had a good game last night against Jerry's Darlings.
However, what I take from this is that he was a 2-star recruit. It points the finger at the idiocy or relying on star ratings, and has less to do with who could or could not make best use of the talent.
Marcus Stiggers was the best HS QB I ever saw, out of Lake Highlands. He was easily the next Tommie Frazier, getting about 10 ypc and throwing out of the option with ease against tough 5A defenses. He had a semi-productive career as a slot receiver for Colorado, but I was sad that he never got a chance to play QB over guys like Mike Moschetti.
Marcus' little boy died of an asthma attack recently... I want to say maybe 2 years ago. Horrible tragedy, and he was probably as good an athlete as his dad.
Stigggers was an unbelievable hs qb. I enjoyed watching him play. The only comment I would make about him as a college athlete is that I remember him to be really small. Isn't he something like 5'6" or 5'7"?
