Casa Bonita

Those that grew up in Dallas/F.W. will remember this restaurant. I think it was located in Arlington or Irving. Even if you did not live in Dallas, it was spoofed on a South Park episode a couple of seasons ago.

Anyway, going there after minor surgery as a child is one of my fondest memories. There is only one left -- in Colorado. Which, I guess, was the inspiration for the South Park episode. However, a brand new location is apparently opening up in Tulsa, OK THIS WEEK.

Now, the state of Oklahoma actually has something to give the Country.

They had one in Tulsa for years (at least from 85-95) with an amazing play/game room, and the entire inside was like you were going through caverns.

Casa Bonita in Denver is the bomb. I loved it as a kid. Every trip we made to Denver we stopped there. I liked it so much that when I took a trip back to Western Nebraska with my kids I made sure to spend an extra day in Denver just to catch Casa Bonita. Tulsa better have the divers...they made the show.

I grew up in Denver and had to go to Casa Bonita everytime we had out of town guests. Without a doubt it has the worst food I have ever eaten. I am not a picky eater and could barely stomach this stuff. It is essentially Pancho's with a cool atmosphere. I am sure it will be a hit in Tulsa.

Oh yeah. I forgot they had food. All I cared about at the time was the monster in the well, the waterfall, the games, etc...

Texanne: I'm not sure how many years it was open in Dallas. Probably not too many. I went there around '86.

Or far too old. I moved to DFW when I was 6 months old in the summer of 1957 and moved away at age 26 in 1983.

Where was this Casa Bonita?

i went to casa bonita in denver about a year ago. i can assure you, not a damn thing has changed... including the food. it is horrible, but it is also classic. my dad used to live in the foothills and we went to casa bonita every time i visited.

also, there needs to be some distinction on the quality of various casa bonitas. i have went to a couple outside of denver (never went to tulsa one) that were more along the lines of a Crystals's Pizza. No divers, no jugglers, no mariachi band etc.

Notreally, where did you dad live? I grew up in Columbine right outside of the Foothills.

Denver has decent mexican food, but you can imagine how happy I was when I first tasted mexican food in Austin. Casa Bonita sucks even based on Colorado mexican food standards. When I was young you would try to digest a half of enchilada, then run around the place and beg your parents to stop at Buger King on the way home.

I have been to both the Casa Bonita in Denver, and the one that was in front of Hulen Mall in Ft. Worth.

I grew up in Arlington from 76-95, and the only one I remember in DFW was the one at Hulen. I want to say it became a Western wear store.

Yea, the atmosphere for a kid was the absolute best ever. I think even as a kid I remember the food not being very good.

aspen park.

and casa bonita was the first time i had ever seen a "taco burger". which is essentially taco meat on a bun. funny.

Dammit. I thought Taco Bueno invented the Taco Burger.

Texanne: I guess Hulen Mall is your answer. I was too young to remember the location other than that it was on the far side of Dallas from where I grew up -- Richardson.

Knoxville,
Taco Bueno first opened in Abilene in 1967, by Bill Waugh. Bill Waugh was also the man who started Casa Bonita, the first of which opened in Oklahoma City in 1971. From what I saw the Denver location is the only Casa Bonita currently open, and the one in Tulsa is set to maybe reopen...again.

It was touched on in the "childhood memories" thread; however, the main point of my post was to point out that a new one was opening.

I concur with Hornin Hong Kong, Pancho's is the ****. There used to be one in Longview and Tyler and now they're both gone.

put me down as someone else who enjoys Pancho's every once in a while. We had open lunch in high school and went there every May 5th

I thought that there was a in Irving right off of story road. Its now a Church. Also, the Pancho's off of 75 and Beltline closed. I thought it was the original Pancho's, but I could be wrong.

Thats what I thought. But, there is one in Mesquite. Apparently Richardson & Garland were not white trash enough.
