The Carolina Bays are a bunch of oval depressions in the earth's surface, ranging from a couple hundred yards to a couple of miles in length, all up and down the Atlantic Coastal region from Georgia to New Jersey. What's "a bunch"? Oh, around a half million.
Here's one picture, pieced together from aerial photos in 1933...
My best guess is that one of the occasional episodes of space debris that Earth passes through from time to time caused them (and probably the Playa Lakes on the high plains, too).
No conspiracy, but plenty o' theory right here.
