Carnival in Salvador, Brazil

I'm planning on heading down to Brazil in February to celebrate Carnival. Have been told by friends who have spent considerable time in the country that Salvador is the place to be for partying.

Anyone been to Brazil for Carnival and able to offer some advice? Places to stay? How to participate in the parades (e.g. abadas, street parties)?

Will be traveling with a group of 4 (male and female). Any safety concerns?

Also, I know I need to get a visa. Anyone know what that process is like?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Would love to go. Never been either.

Visa's are easy. Literally google "i need a visa" and you will find places online. I used an online company right out of Houston where there is a government office that issues passports. They give the very simple instructions and you can get one in literally a few days, but I would recommend getting on it now. I have seen friends panic days before a flight because they had not gotten or expedited theirs.

Never a bad idea to have a visa when opportunities arise.

Have fun!

There's a long list of service providers on the Brazilian Consulate website for Houston. Just be ready for the $130 PP "reciprocity fee" thanks to good 'ol uncle Sam.
