Car subwoofer question

I bought a .75 cubic foot enclosed box for a car subwoofer. The sub, a Kicker C10, recommends a minimun 1.0 cubic foot enclosure. I'm not looking for incredible bass, just something to add a bit more to what I've got. Is this a problem?

Second, can I get good results mounting it on the drivers side wall of the trunk and aim it towards the passenger side?

Question 1 - yes, just get some polyfill. It will "slow down" the bass wave inside of the box, making the box "feel" bigger. There are equations for how much to put in, but if I were you, I"d go with "some." Maybe half the box full, something like that. Keep it away from the magnet of the woofer.

Question 2 - any orientation will work fine. Bass waves are omnidirectional - it doesn't matter where the speaker is pointed, you'll hear (feel) it anywhere in the car. My last sub was pointed downward, and the box I"ve built for the new one is also pointed downware (beneath my center console).

The bigger question is, what Amp are you powering this sub with? Even a marginal sub can sound great with a good amp, and you can run a JL Audio dual-coil W7 with a BOSS amp and it will sound like crap.

I agree with the above poster except about the polyfill. I have had no problem with basically a full load of polyfill in two different sub boxes and have opened off the shelf subs with full loads of polyfill touching the magnet.

Are you suggesting heat is a problem? Its not flammable.

I've actually never had an issue with the polyfill-sub interaction, either. I guess it's more of a personal choice. If I wanted to really reach, I could MAYBE see an isse if the polyfill gets into the cage and interferes with the excursion area of the cone, but that's way out there.

In terms of not filling the box all the way, that's just because you don't want to go too far past an effective 1 ft^3. Too big of a box will sounds as bad as too small of a box. (I'm pretty sure you knew that, tho ... not telling you anything new)
