Car question

Being a newbie to car transactions, somebody help me out. I have a 99 Jetta that I usually take to the dealership to get fixed (still under warranty).

Today I get a call with somebody from the dealership saying that they need more good-condition used cars to sell and the service people recommended mine.

Now, I immediately thought it was a marketing ploy to get me in there and get a new(er) car. Is that what I should be expecting?

That is exactly what's happening. Did you warranty just expire? I bet it did and they want to sell you a new car with a new warranty so you'll have oodles of peace of mind.

Did they make you an offer? Also is it time for a new car? They are trying to sell you but if the offer looks good I would jump on it. Just remember to take in someone like a gf or your wife that is always going "I don't like this car or the price." That alone you save you some money.

Actually, they may need used cars, who knows. 2004 Toyota Camry's were going for more than invoice on a new one at the auction last week, So I'd rather buy someone's trade for aliitle bit less but still a great offer than pay that much. You should see what they have to say.

Dealers get highter margins on used cars.

Yes, you should be expecting them to try to sell you a new car, and then resell yours for at least 1/3 more than they're gonna offer you for it.

Just for fun-- if you have the time, take it to Carmax for a free appraisal and see what they say it's worth to them... just to see how far off the dealership is.

So let me get this right. If they offer me $20,000 they should expect to sell it for $26,000. Anyone that believes that doesn't have a clue about the profits at car dealerships.
