car problem

Let me start by saying I am stupid with cars, whcih is why I am asking for help here. I have a vehicle ('93 Landcruiser if it matters) is in need of some help. It starts fine, engine runs fine, except for the fact that the car will not accelerate. The transmission engages, and I can take the car around the block just letting it roll and letting the transmission do the work, but when I hit the gas, I get nothing but a revving engine. The car will move in every gear, but with no acceleration. So unless I want to roll to work at 5 mph, I need to know what's wrong with the car. Any thoughts?

Again, I may be showing my stupidity here, but the car has an automatic transmission. I've had standard transmission vehicles where I burned up a clutch or two, but I wasn't really even aware that an automatic transmission even had a clutch. SO does it?

I have an '86 and I believe '87 was the last year manual transmissions were available on Land Cruisers. It sounds to me like your transmission needs work. But try this: Do you have a "winter" switch anywhere? It may be called something else on your vehicle, but it is usually located on or near your gearshift or maybe even on your dash. Many vehicles then had a switch that would allow you to accelerate from a standstill in 2nd gear as opposed to first to avoid spinning out on the ice/snow. You might have inadvertently engaged that switch. I used to do it all the time in my Passport. If none of that is true, post your question here: The Link
They are very helpful and quite expedient in their responses. Hope that helps. Good luck. Nice vehicle, by the way!

It's either dirt cheap to fix (plug the computer into a diagnostic) or your tranny is shot. same thing happened to an old f-150 i had. i think it was called a slipping shift differential or somesuch.

take it to a Landcruiser specialist. they are much, much less likely to **** you with some ******** diagnosis, though i'm not sure how much time they have with newer cruisers.

There is a Land Cruiser Shop in Pflugerville.
I suggest you give them a call about your problems.
Ask to speak to Edwin....you can tell him "texmex" sent you.

Probably looking at a new transmission, as it sounds like your torque converter is toast (not converting the torque to drive power to the transmission.)
Shoot an email to accurate horn-

Or go to someplace like Dyer Automotive and transmission on North Lamar. As they will check it out for Free and you are probably getting all sorts of codes off your "black box."

Thanks for the replies, in the shop today, diaganosis by tomorrow. I'm hoping for the best and expecting the worst. If it needs a complete transmission overhaul, it may be time to go car shopping.

Edwin knows his stuff. I sold a ****** up '77 FJ-40 to him a couple of years ago and he re-built the ****** for one of his customers.
