I don't have a car as nice as the one listed, but if he can pick up my car in Dallas on Saturday morning, go to prom that night, then have my car back to me on Sunday morning, I might be impressed enough to let him borrow it.

On this reference thing from last year, why can't he borrow their car again? "Sorry kid, no way you borrow my car again this year but I will be happy to give you a reference for some other sucker".

Maybe the person he borrowed from sold the car or something. But then again, maybe he just wants to use another car and not repeat? Like the girl cares. Be more concerned about buying champagne and a hotel room. You can drive a Yugo at that point.
