Can't wait for the UCLA game

I want to see how our posts match up against some physical, good posts. Can Nneka continue her double double string? Will Imani display her recent strong scoring and rebounding?

Will our frosh guards match/surpass UCLA's? And can the Bruins slow down Chas? Whose bench will step up to provide relief without a loss of effectiveness?

How healthy are the Horns? We got Chelsea back but now have Chassidy, Empress and Cokie questionable. But a week between games should be a big help for those three. The team will need them in conference play but this game won't be the same if any have to miss it.

I'm going to enjoy watching this game. It will answer some questions and probably raise a few more. It would be a good win against a top 20 team.

I can't wait either ... we'll see if scheduling this game in Houston was worth it.

depends where you are. In Austin, there are several sports bars around campus, and I believe, Third Base on sixth or fifth, also gets the LHN.

Pages 2 & 3, especially 3, from In The Stands forum, have several threads on sports bars in various cities that could be helpful.

Very bad 1st half. Can't hit and throwing the ball away repeatedly. Oh we'll, it's a good learning experience and they will get toughened up. Really missing Chas too. Also Cokie has played very little and Nneka out early due to 2 fouls. Hopeful for better second half.

Ouch. Zero adjustments made on offense to the fact that UCLA shifted to a zone. Nearly 12 minutes between made baskets. I knew those stale offense schemes from the Conradt playbook of the 1990s would bite these teams in the *** when they played a team they could not out-athlete. Chas's shooting would have helped, but Aston is proving to be an even worse x's and o's coach than I feared. Totally failure to reverse the basketball against the zone. Hoping for some smart adjustments in the second half, but not holding my breath

Tree fan, the offense is not quite as stale as it was under Conradt and I do share your concern about Aston's offensive coaching. Like I said I'm concerned but think this team will improve a lot in the next few weeks, but they are gonna get waxed by Tennessee. Ugh.

I'm sitting court side at the game (right behind the basket) and Texas is playing hard, talking, and trying to execute, but shots are not falling. UCLA is in a zone and we have no outside threats with no one hitting and Chas out. Sigh.

Why Texas agreed to play this game in Houston is evident the Horns should have played a home and home with UCLA instead. Horns getting waxed!

I hope they improve, because this is painful to watch. You cannot just pass the ball around the perimeter and then make a bad pass into the post and pray against a big disciplined zone, but it is totally obvious that the team has no clue how to do anything else. Ugly, stupid basketball: 25 turnovers versus 11 made field goals. And the 12 minutes between baskets in the first half may very well be the most stagnant offense playing, I have EVER seen from any Texas women' s basketball team. Coaches learn too. This kind of coaching REALLY won't cut it against good to elite teams. And it was also totally apparent from watching them win.

I feel for the players. They are playing hard, but what good is playing hard when the offense you are trying hard to execute has failed you 30 plus times in the game already, and your coach has not prepared you to do anything else. There are many ways to break a zone when your perimeter shots are not falling. Run the baseline, reverse the ball, backdoor cut, run a screen, run a double screen, penetrate. NADA. This offense is set up to FAIL against teams with equivalent athleticism. The UCLA coach realized it after 4 minutes. She made a very simple game-winning adjustment. Why couldn't Aston?

Thank goodness LHN was not widely available.

I put this on Coach A as her first mistake in agreeing to a match against lower ranked UCLA in HOUSTON.

Seattle, Why would I be happy? Hopefully this was just a misdirected post rather than you just doing your usual trolling. If the team had to lose like this, I'm glad it happened sooner rather than later. And with our two best perimeter threats out of the game, I can't say that I'm surprised. If Chas and Chelsea are both out, I will be watching the Tenn game from my couch.

Man, didn’t take long for the doom and gloom posters to start.

It was pretty simple. No outside threat, collapse inside and cut off that threat until Texas can bust the zone shooting from outside. Never happened. A lot of the TOs were unforced, sometimes it looked like they were passing to UCLA. I can’t say was surprised by our inability to score from outside. The stats show that and you can bet that is in every scouting report. Other than Chas, and Chelsea in the one game she played and Brady in one game, Texas does not have a good outside shooting team at this point in time. The team came into this game with a good overall shooting percentage due to the threat of Chas helping to create openings inside for our posts. I have to admit that I was disappointed by the defense after UCLA made their run to take the lead for the first time. Texas just seemed half a step slow a lot on D many times.

The passing on the perimeter without penetrating, imo, is simply a lack of confidence in their outside shooting. When they did try to penetrate, more likely than not, they lost the ball or made a poor pass.

I expect the team to rebound from this and learn a lot from this, especially the wings and guards. I am looking forward to the Tenn game as I considered three games as being points where the team could evaluate where they were and what they needed to improve on: St. Johns, UCLA and Tenn. Right now, based on how they played vs ISU, I will add Iowa to that list.

I agree Babhorn. The sky isn't falling, nor is nirvana here. We aren't where we are going to be the whole season. This was a tough loss with many unforced errors. We definitely missed Chas, Cokie and Chelsea. It was good to see Cokie play, but she only got 11 minutes and wasn't her normal self during any of them.

We started 3 freshman, a juco transfer and a sophomore. I hoped to see better passing, shooting and decision making, but remind myself that much of that comes with experience and won't necessarily show up in the first game with a really strong competitor. Not trying to make excuses, just trying to accept reality.

I know practices focus on getting better in each of those areas, in addition to strong defense. Now the young ones will know what Coach is talking about when she talks about D-1 skills. Our freshman are going to have to learn and improve quickly. Consistent crispness and discipline will hopefully be developed in short order.

Go Horns!!!!

Spin it as much as you want. this loss is as much on the coaching staff as the players. Not a single adjustment on offense to the fact that UCLA was playing zone. Not one. Kinda stunning, actually.

I honestly don't recall that. But even with the hindsight, I still don't have a problem with the game being scheduled and played in Houston. One, cancer treatment/ research is something near and dear to my heart so anything that can be done to benefit the cause im going to be in support of. And secondly, the schedules are created a year in advance. There's no way a coach would plan a schedule around being down two starters pretty much. If that were the case, then why schedule anyone other than the little sisters of the poor?

fwiw, the team did practice against the zone. Missing shots did not help in breaking it. Doesn't matter what adjustments are made if the shots are not falling. Not hitting shots from the spots left open by the zone does not encourage the defensive team to come out of the zone.

20 shots in a row. A shooting percentage of 24% for the game. Nearly 12 minutes between baskets. That's not just the shots not falling. That's a team with no clue what to do on offense. UCLA is a solid team, but they are not particularly defensive minded. What was so frustrating to watch, is that the team never tried to do anything differently despite the fact that what they were doing clearly wasn't working. How many times did a a guard try to penetrate, a post reverse the ball, backdoor cuts, a player run the baseline, heck, even a screen? Thought so. If they were trying to break open the zone, and couldn't - frustrating but fine. Instead it simply became clear there is no plan B on offense, and there is barely a plan A. I hope the coaches will learn from this game. Keep spinning.

I was the one who thought scheduling a game in Houston was a great idea. The venue wasn't right, but that doesn't matter, and neither did the opponent. There is a lot of girls hoops talent in the Houston area, and we need to have a presence there annually.

Team isn't healthy, and I hate that, as it was a constant under Coach G, as well.

With no Fussell on the court, a win wasn't going to be easy. It looked worse than I thought it would, but, a loss by 20 or a loss by 2 points still counts the same in your won-loss record.
