I want a small camera that also kicks ***.

Which one do I go with? Hurry though, Dell has sweet deals on these.

i bought the sd-500 yesterday and have only gotten to play around with it a little bit, but so far is seems pretty bad-a

I love my tiny Canon. Slightly different model, but awesome. And you are very correct. Size is the most important thing.

Edit: One thing is Canon uses pretty standard memory cards while Sony uses proprietary technology. You should check the prices.

what are the deals?

i have pretty much decided on an sd-400 myself, but if there were good deals, i would upgrade to the sd-500.

everything about the sd-400 has been well reviewed. only problems are saying that can have some red-eye problems, the lcd screen (big) can be kind of fragile, the exterior scratches somewhat easily, and the plastic covering the batteries and mem card can be flimsy.

everything else, picture quality, functions, ease of use, turn on time, canon's own technology, are wonderful.

the sony's are better for the burst photography, quicker shutter speed. i think you can hit 4 frames per second on the sony, and only 2 on the canon.

however, the movie quality for the canon is very good.

also, one of the most common recs to me is to go with a camera that is made by a company focused on cameras (canon, nikon, olympus). sony's bread and butter is stereos, etc, with cameras as a side business.

canon is heavily focused on cameras and people say they are the best.

but seriously, what are dell's deals?

ok, found the deals, and the extra $30 off with free shipping takes it to $309. problem is, there's deals on the sd500 as well that would drop it to $364. thats pretty cheap.

now all i need is for someone here to tell me thats way too much camera than i need (5mp v. 7mp, and all i'm going to be doing is taking point and shoot random photos) and to spend the money on upgrading to a better memory card and i'm pulling the trigger on the sd400.

thank you hornfans for being my financial conscience

Don't knock Sony's cameras.

Sony designed and manufactured all of Nikon's image sensors. There are only two big-boys in the image sensor business right now - Canon and Sony. Pound-for-pound, the best image sensor on the market right now, the one in the D2X, is made by Sony. And the Sony camera lenses are made by Zeiss, who have a long history and reputation of some serious lenses. The Zeiss lenses for the Hasselblad system are superior to Canon and Nikon lenses for their 35mm systems.

Cameras are *not* a side business for Sony and Sony compact cameras match up well with the best Nikon and Canons.

Canon's manuals are very good. The software that comes with Canon cameras to manage the images is second to none. Canon does not use proprietary memory. Sony uses good lenses, but I think the nod goes to the Canon.

Also, any small camera will have issue with red-eye - it's a function of the distance between the flash and the lens, and there's no way to get around it with these small cameras.
