Cancun

We're going to Cancun on a company trip (pleasure, no business... fortunately) in February and, given I haven't been there in a long time, I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions...

I don't consider Cancun to be Mexico... that's why I haven't been there since my junior year in college (a strange and crazy week, to say the least). I haven't really had any desire to plan a vacation there but, hey, the company is paying so I'm not turning it down. So, any ideas? I'm sure we'll have plenty of free time...

Just got back from there a few weeks ago. The above poster was right, head south. I would recommend going to the bus station & jumping on the Playa Express, a shuttle leaving every 30 minutes or so to Playa Del Carmen. It's a great, small city with a very bohemian feel to it. Great open air bars, restaurants, and small hotels located along 5th avenue, just 2 blocks off the ocean. Very relaxing and peaceful place unlike Cancun, in my opinion, which is extremely commercialized and overdone. We were originally to stay in Cancun but packed our bags for good after a day trip to Playa. Best decision we made. I'd recommend the hotel El Lunata or Hotel Fusion (which is a small place right on the beach that also has amazing fish tacos, guacamole, ritas, and the like.)

Isla Mueres is also very nice, especially Playa Norte.
Lots of small little restaurants, a few casual beach bars.

You take a ferry from a dock about 10 minutes north of Ciudad Cancun (take a cab from the bus station).

Good stuff - I'm going to see how much we really have to be "with" the group and if we can wander off - like I said, Cancun is not my bag but no way I'm turning down a free trip to the beach.

We'll be staying at the Cancun Palace - anyone know much about it? Do you know if it has a fitness center?

I was there about 3 1/2 years ago, but I don't know anything about the "Palace". What I do know is that it seemed like every hotel down there was big enough to have a Fitness Center and then some.

Our hotel had about 4-6 indoor tennis courts. Two to three outdoor pools...

They are all MONSTROSITIES! I don't think you will have a problem finding a fitness center.

The fitness center was actually bad *** - plenty of free weights, machines, etc. As for what we did... simply put, Isla Mujeres was by far my favorite. Next time, I'd just as soon take the ferry straight to Isla and hang out for a few days. So much better than Cancun!

I went for a bachelor party in October. We stayed at the Omni. We had a blast but spent most of the time at the hotel. We had all-inclusive, the pools were great. The beach, however, wasn't as good as it was the last time I went 4 years ago. Very very choppy water; just as bad if not worse than Cabo. Apparently one of the hurricanes really tore up the beaches a couple of years ago.

Please don't tell anyone about Isla. On my visit there last year there were far too many construction trucks (though it's not stopping us from going back this summer).
