Can you crack an egg with one hand?

I suppose that I technically can, but it involves pulverizing the shell and picking little pieces of it out of the egg. Is there a secret to this that I am not aware of?

I just now realized that I've been cracking one handed for a while with no problems.

i also just realized that describing cracking an egg in typed words is ******* impossible.

good luck.

I can, without little egg shell fragments. It's hard to describe, but basically you can't think about it too much, or worry too much about splattering a little egg on yourself or the countertop. If you try too hard or go about it in a careful, mechanical manner, you'll definitely get egg shell fragments in your egg. Just grab the thing, pick a corner, crack the egg, and then use your thumb and palm to separate the two egg shell parts. Let gravity do the rest. Toss the shells in the trash/sink/wherever, and you're good to go.

Again, the secret is just that you have to get a nice, clean break. The only way to do that is swiftly and confidently. In fact, one time I was trying to show my grandma how to do it, and I messed it up (got little egg shell particles everywhere), because I was taking it too step-by-step. You just have to go for it.

I cup the egg in the upper part of my palm and lower part of my fingers and strike the middle against the edge of the skillet, bowl or sink and then spread it apart using my thumb and little finger. When I was in 3rd grade I saw somebody do this and thought it was the coolest thing (i am easily amused), so I practiced it until I had it down.

The key is to have a thin cracking edge. You want to get almost a slice or cut instead of a smash. I eat 6 scrambled egg whites almost every morning and I use one particular bowl every time because it has thin "walls." Have to do it one handed because I am holding the separator in the other hand. Other key is getting the crack to cut about 1/3 of the way through the egg so you don't have as much to break w/ your hand.

Takes a bit of practice, but it's like anything else - pretty easy after a while.

I disagree with everyone on here. The secret is cracking it on a flat surface. It's easy as hell and you wont get any egg shell in your egg.

One of the TV chefs said the same thing about using a flat surface. Using an edge propels fragments into the egg according to him. I have never fainted from the extra effort of using two hands.

yep, flat surface is the key.

I first tried it after watching Letterman do it on tv. The man is also a whiz at sacking groceries.

Flat surface is very important but so is only hitting it once hard enough to break it well. Multiple hits will also make more cracks which will increase your chance of getting shell in the egg.
Nothing worse than biting into a pile of scrambled eggs and feeling that "crunch" between your teeth.

I hate that.

Yes, I can. Flat, edge... it doesn't matter.

& Yes, this does mean I'm better than you. In this area, anyhow.

My kid does it with either hand, two at a time when he is in a hurry, but then he is a pro. I can do one at a time, on the flat surface, but I do get a shell in there occasionally.
