Can we leave the UN now?

Bolivia will this month table a draft United Nations treaty giving "Mother Earth" the same rights as humans — having just passed a domestic law that does the same for bugs, trees and all other natural things in the South American country.

The bid aims to have the UN recognize the Earth as a living entity that humans have sought to "dominate and exploit" — to the point that the "well-being and existence of many beings" is now threatened.

The wording may yet evolve, but the general structure is meant to mirror Bolivia's Law of the Rights of Mother Earth, which Bolivian President Evo Morales enacted in January.

That document speaks of the country's natural resources as "blessings," and grants the Earth a series of specific rights that include rights to life, water and clean air; the right to repair livelihoods affected by human activities; and the right to be free from pollution.

It also establishes a Ministry of Mother Earth, and provides the planet with an ombudsman whose job is to hear nature's complaints as voiced by activist and other groups, including the state.

These people need to be stopped. It's not a joke or funny anymore. However, I read a funny comment that basically referenced the japanese and whether or not they can sue mother earth for the tsunami.

I wonder is Bolivia has small claims court.

No Tsunami but the freeze this wnter killed my backyard.

Sounds like Evo has been dipping into the product again.

But, no, we don't want to leave the UN: having it in NYC makes it easier to spy on them and brings a lot of business to a big city in the US

Who will provide the fig leaf for our elective wars?

It was horribly amusing to have all the UN bashers using a UN resolution to justify the invasion of Iraq.

Oh look, a former Obama Czar is in favor of this. Unfortunately, the whitehouse is still filled with kooks like this from the top down.

Van Jones, the Obama administration's controversial former "green jobs czar," has found a new calling: helping to push for a new, global architecture of environmental law that would give Mother Nature the same rights status as humans.

The new movement is almost certain to be showcased at a U.N.-sponsored global summit on “sustainable development” to take place in Rio de Janeiro in May 2012, when similar issues of “global environmental governance” are a major focus of attention.

Jones is taking up the challenge as one of the newest board members of an obscure San Francisco New Age-style organization known as the Pachamama Alliance, which has been creating a global movement to make human rights for Mother Nature an international reality — complete with enforceable laws — by 2014. The Rio summit will create an important midpoint for that campaign.

Jones joined the alliance's board last December, shortly after the organization announced creation of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature to carry the concept around the world—and install it not only in international law but in the statutes of communities and municipalities across the U.S.

He resigned from the administration in September 2009 after making public apologies for some of his past actions, including the signing of a 2004 petition that questioned whether the Bush administration had deliberately allowed the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to happen, and his previous affiliation with a self-described communist organization, the Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement (STORM).The Link

Can I sue mother earth if she drops a tree down onto my roof?

Seriously, I don't know how any of this can possibly be taken seriously if meat-eating is not labeled as a crime. If you really believe that all nature and creatures have a right to life, there's no way you can reconcile killing them for food, or any other reason (I'm talking to you, dude who found a tarantula walking around on his porch.)

This is like hearing a child ask if they can leave a family because one of their siblings is annoying.

No general, you may not leave the UN.

I didn't even think about the poor grapes and strawberries I ate this morning. They have rights and feelings too so I imagine that the exploiters should be vanquished from the earth. I'll let the genius in Bolivia be the first to eliminate his or her exploitation.

Prod - Back that truck up. I didn't make a comment about this specifically. My comment was regarding how opposing sides have shown a growing tendency to build absurd and extreme strawmans of each other. This practice is what stands in the way of true compromise and working together, and it's exactly what you're doing here.

here is another sweet reason why the UN is awesome...

Syria to become newest member of human rights council...this group we pay billions of dollars to a year is awesome. syria will be blaming us for our human rights violations...like providing free education to illegal aliens...as it shoots its citizens....lol.....

The brutal crackdown by Syrian President Bashar Assad may finally be getting the attention of world leaders -- but apparently not enough to stop Syria from becoming the newest member of the U.N. Human Rights Council.

And despite calling for an independent investigation into the crackdown, which has left hundreds dead, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon apparently won’t do much about blocking Syria’s path to the human rights group.

If we weren't part of the UN, how would Obama know it was ok to attack Libya? Our ability to act in issues of foreign policy would be greatly hampered if we couldn't find our direction from the UN.
