Can the GOP Win with these Numbers?

Posted March 5, 2012, 4:09 pm MT Fox Latino poll: President Obama wallops any GOP
The Denver Post

A Fox News Latino poll released Monday shows President Obama with a huge lead — 70 percent to 14 percent — over Mitt Romney if he were to be the Republican presidential candidate come November.

For that matter, none of the Republican candidates gains much traction with Latino voters.

This is bad news for Republicans in key swing states, including Colorado, where the Latino vote is considered crucial.

Satchel,

It is indeed an impressive lead, but it's still early in the game. Many things can happen between now and November. I would expect the GOP nominee to start closing the gap immediately after the convention. Both Obama and his opponent could be vulnerable to changes in the economy and/or the world situation in the fall. Too early to consider it locked up either way.

I personally hope that the GOP ticket can overtake Obama in November - guess we'll see. It will also potentially make a difference in the makeup of the next Congress.

Since you didn't link the source, it's hard to tell. Are there likely voters? Who was surveyed? What was the question? Did they give them a list of candidates and ask which one they would vote for?

I certrainly wouldn't say it's good news, but it's sweet of you to be so concerned.

It's hard to win with only 14% of Latinos supporting you. The numbers are worse for the others in the bunch. Mittens has been backed into a wingnut corner that will prove difficult for him to extricate himself from. Couple that with a sizeable shift in women to the Dems and this could get ugly.

It's rather ironic. Latino's support Obama because they know he won't do anything to curtail illegal immigration. Blacks support Obama despite the fact that Black unemployment is at record levels. Seems to me that the two issues are related. Does no one else see this?

Satchel, let me take the single opportunity to agree with you. Neither problem will get fixed because the majority of Americans do not seem to care.

The state of Alabama is actually working on the issue. It will be an interesting situation to watch. Right now, most are trying to pin the racism label on folks that try to address the issue. So typical.

Yeah, that's quite some work Alabama is doing. Those numbers could fall below 14%. Here's hoping. From Bloomberg:

Alabama and Georgia are arguing to salvage state laws targeting illegal immigrants in a hearing before a federal court that already said there’s a “substantial likelihood” some parts will be thrown out.

A three-judge panel that began hearing cases today in Atlanta temporarily blocked Alabama from requiring illegal immigrants to carry registration papers and forcing schools to determine the legal status of students as they enroll. It refused to block other provisions.

The U.S. Justice Department and nongovernment advocacy groups are likely to win parts of their challenges to the statutes because the federal government exclusively controls immigration, a different three-judge panel of the court said earlier

Satch,

The general election campaign hasn't even started. It's way too early to make predictions, and I'm not saying that because I necessarily want the predictions to be wrong. I'm not going to vote for any of the GOP candidates (unless Paul pulls off a miracle) and wouldn't consider a Romney victory to be significantly better or worse than an Obama victory.

I don't think Obama supporters should do a victory lap in March- it'd be like us declaring ourselves MNCs because of our recruiting rankings.

That being said- from my most ardent Conservative friends who are intelligent- they all tell me they are less than enthusiastic about anyone in the field. They may end up still voting for Romney at the end because they hate Obama, but they aren't going to show up to rallies or donate money online. It's not looking good right now for the GOP, but again, it's way too early to call scoreboard.

The best poll we have will be loud and clear in November, 2012.

No victory laps here. Just stating the obvious. Failing a change in position, Romney's immigration position will not win him more than 14% of the Latino vote. That's a pretty safe bet.

The Latino vote is one of the big reason the GOP won't win the Presidential election in 2012. This cost them in 2008 and they have done nothing to bridge that gap over the last 3.5 years. In fact they have widened the gap with their stance on many issues. They continue to appeal to their conservative white base. They would probably reelect GWB if he were on the ballot.

It is human nature to want change. The grass is always greener on the other side, as they say. However, I think most of the country now understands that 4.5% unemployment was a hell of a lot better than where we are after 3 years of hopey-changey, reset buttons and the middle east apology tour.

Of course the GOP can and will. They will starpushing what Obama can't do. This is about his lack of leadership and his lack of understanding just the basics of economics.

He ran on "YES WE CAN!"

now he's trying to defend his horrible Presidency with

"WHY HE CAN't"

Great leaders accepted their failures and don't blame everything on everyone else. He has an excuse for every failure he has.
