Can Go to One Restaurant in Luling or Lockhart

Flying into Austin for Memorial Day weekend and staying in Victoria, but going to take a road trip to one of the BBQ meccas. Trying to decide between City Market, Smittys, Kreuz Market, or Blacks.

I'm leaning pretty hard to City Market for lunch and going by Smitty's and Kreuz's for take home. But then found a review that Black's has the best taste of them all. Not really believing the review though.

Thoughts please.

Blacks is good, but not better than them all. Kruez is still my favorite, but you can't really go wrong with any of them. The one thing I go to Black's for is their sausage. It's hard to beat.

Do the lunch at City Market, then to go from Kreuz, allowing you to hit 2 places as you suggested. Black's and Smitty's do not measure up to Kreuz.

Black's doesn't belong in this conversation, don't get me wrong they are very good but just not in-line with the other three.

I'd do City Market for sure as they have the best sausage and then as far a Kreuz and Smitty's goes, it is a matter of choice. I prefer Kreuz, but it definitely is a preference and each person has their own taste

I think I if I was pressed to pick one for brisket only I would give the lean to City Market. If I had to pick one based on mutiple items it would be a coin flip between Kruez and Smittys. Black's is no longer in the same league IMO, and my folks live there so I frequent them all. All that said I just do not think there is a wrong answer between CM, Kruez and Smittys. I think at the top of their game my personal preference is the brisket at CM, the sausage, chop and prim rib at Smitty's and ribs at Kruez's. That said they are all brilliant.

i have had better brisket at both kruez and smittys than city market, but i have had brisket that blew me away a couple times at city market

however, i have never had better ribs, sausage, or beans than that i have had at city market. ever. by far

that is based on several dozen trips to all of the places mentioned

blacks is not in the same universe as the other places in any category

grew up on Kruez's and thought it MUST be the best. Still think it's really good despit the lack of "nostalgia" their new building offers. However, after discovering City Market in Luling, I suggest the latter at least four out of five times we're going through that area. City Market has better brisket and ribs for certain (imho) but (slightly) lesser sausage.

Bottom line though... can't go wrong with either!

PS: Black's is not even in the same league... would rather go to one of the Bill Miller chain places in Austin.

City Market is good but it's more like most BBQ joints. Kreuz is like meat heaven. What would you like with your meat? More meat of course. Who needs veggies or other side items. Although they are getting away from that now that they moved into the new place.

Not once has Kreuz forced me to purchase a side...just because they have them doesn't mean you have to eat them. Your argument is kind of lame.

Also, how does serving sides "make them different"? The guys that cook the meat, one of which has been there twenty years or so, don't have a damn thing to do with the sides. They aren't even in the same room.

had a chance to eat at Kreuz's Thursday night and Smitty's Mon night. City Market was closed after i had called them and told me they'd be open Mem. day. Anyway's I was a bit bummed I didn't get LCM, but was absolutely brought back to life with BBQ from Smitty's.
I thought Smitty's was much better than Kreuz's. Only thing I'd put ahead of Smitty's was the sausage. Will be back down to that area again in a month and will make it a mandate to eat at LCM, but so far Smitty's is definitely at the top of my list.

Having spent a fair amount of my youth and time since in Caldwell County (in and around Lockhart), I can assert that each--Kreuz, Smitty's and City Market--is excellent in its own right. You can't go wrong. One's preference usually boils down to taste. The best solution, of course, is to try as much from as many as possible.

I'd also recommend patronizing Floyd's (Chisholm Trail). The cafeteria-style service and presence of fried catfish notwithstanding, Floyd's offers wonderful barbecued chicken and tasty chopped BoBs. Chisholm Trail is not on the same level as the previous three, however.

There used to be a little-known shop in McMahan that served some out-of-this-word eats, but I think it shut down years ago.

Black's, as others have noted, doesn't belong in the conversation.

I'd also advise buying a box of sausage rings. What you can't eat today or tomorrow will freeze perfectly fine for next week ... and the week after that ... and on and on.

Living in Idaho, where most people seem to regard barbecue as a piece of grilled meat with something like ketchup splashed on top of it, I just want to say that y'all don't know how lucky you are. I miss that Caldwell County barbecue so.

I haven't been to Kreuz in at least a year. I went to Smitty's maybe 6 weeks ago and LCM about 3 weeks ago (been to both several times). After my recent trips to both, I would put:

1) LCM
2) Smitty's
3) Kreuz
