camping lantern

Went camping this past weekend and the camp next to us had 2 lanterns that he had hung in the trees (approx. 10' high) and lit his entire camp. My question is what should I look for in a lantern. What about LED?

Seriously, you should look for something not very bright so as not to bother your neighbors.

What you described sounds like a Coleman 2-mantle lantern that runs on either Coleman fuel or gasoline. They put out a ton of light.

I haven't seen any LED lantern that comes close to putting out that much light.

I bought a Coleman lantern at Walmart like 5 years ago. It has 2 "mantles" which are made of some fiber/cloth or something.

The one I have is powered by the little green propane bottles that are about the size of a football. One full one of those will last SEVERAL camping trips. This thing uses very little propane. I have had to buy some backup "mantles" b/c they are pretty fragile but I bring extras with me. Another thing, the one I have is self starting. So I go to a position on the knob and it starts it. I don't need a match to light it up. And it comes with a handle that you can hang as well as a base that goes under the propane bottle. We used it camping at Inks Lake in May and Guadalupe River State Park a few weeks ago and for a group of ~6 of us, we only needed that 1 lantern.

I have a Coleman propane and a rechargeable electric. The electric is handy because you can use it in your tent safely and it doesn't got gotter than hell like the propane model. Plus, the electric is handy if the power goes out in your home.
