Anybody have recomendations on the best state parks to go camping in? Taking the girls (6 & 12) during spring break.

Petit Jean (sp?) in northwestern Arkansas is pretty and has some nice hiking trails.

I'll second Petit Jean if it's not too far to drive.

I'd also recommend Buffalo River and Lake Catherine State Park (the trail to the falls isn't dauting and the payoff is nice).

Floating the Buffalo is the highlight to Arkansas. There are many camp grounds and cabins located along it. Just find one close to somewhere else you want to check out. Last place I stayed was Silver Hill and they had several cabins there.

Lake Ouachita State Park is nice, you can rent a pontoon and see more of the lake, its gorgeous.
Lake Ouachita

Petit Jean is nice, it has a nice hike to the bottom of the waterfall. The park isn’t on a lake but there is one nearby.

Devil's Den is nice for hiking. Again, there’s no lake but I recall a stream/river in the park.

Canoeing the Buffalo River is VERY nice as mentioned. The national park doesn't take reservations so its first come first served so it can be hard to get a spot.

Rent Canoes

I’d say after canoeing the Buffalo River, Ouachita

If you want to go rustic, go to NW Arkie.

If you want a place where you can also rent boats and horses and have lots of activities available, go to Degray State Park.

The other interesting note about James Dickey is that when he died a few years ago, the Houston Chronicle ran a note on page 2 of the front section that said he was recovering, and on page 6 or so, it printed the story that said he had died.

I went to the crater of Diamonds when I was a kid. It a 30 acre plowed field you dig it. Even when I was nine, I thought it was stupid.

Well that is one advantage Arkansans mostly have over us here in Texas, they get to actually see their stretch of the Ouachita Mountains.
