Not many rapids anywhere right now, since the drought has left Texas rivers pretty low.
Try the Frio. About 2 hours from New Braunfels, but it's the cleanest and clearest river in Texas. That's because the water comes straight from the Edwards aquifer and the bottom is completely made of limestone, not dirt. Camp at Neal's. It's the place to go there.
I saw your post and was going to say the very same thing Inester said. I used to stay over in Leakey and go canoeing down the rapids on the Frio. Great fun and good for swimming too.
It's not easy and it's not quick, but if you want long river rafting excursions, the Big Bend has a ton available. They can be a day trip or they can be 2 weeks. You're on the Rio Grande surrounded by large canyon walls in some breathtaking scenery, and you're a looong ways from any city. I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but it sounds like you want away from the commercialized Guadalupe stuff. But I do appreciate the diversity that Texas has to offer.
There are quite a few out there, but here is a link to one: The Link
Check out Spencer's Canoes outside of Martindale. If you have a canoe or yak, the San Marcos is cold and fast right now.And remarkably inner tube free.
what do you mean hornbud? been floatin' twice already and didn't see the fuzz or a concerned neighbor at all. hell, we could have had a giant floating mirror stacked 10 feet high with the white stuff and gotten away with it.
The last time I was in NB, we saw cops hiding under shade trees in flat-bottom boats with outboard motors. They were peering upstream with binoculars, and when they saw something they didn't like, they'd take off to intercept.
While we're at it, does anyone know the story with NB outlawing beer on the Guadalupe? It was a few years back or so, and I think the notion was rather short lived, but rumors still persist.
i believe that's a proposal that goes before the city council in NB annually. brought to you by LE and the residents on the river, i'm sure. doubtful it would ever get passed, though.
