Camping, a 5 year old, and a short weekend

Hey folks,

My son announced to me today that he would like to go camping with me. Now this is a great thing since it is something that I love to do and he is expressing interest. Since it has been many years since I went camping (pre marraige-pre kiddos) and most if not all of that was in the Hill Country near my beloved hometown of New Braunfels, and I would like to do just an overnight trip to get started with, I need suggestions on state parks to go to near Houston. I know about Sommerville and Fayette county, but not much about Huntsville, Livingston, or some of the others. As always, your feedback is much appreciated.

I took my 5 year old camping last weekend. Be aware that burn bands exist at most parks (at least in Central Texas) right now. That includes charcoal cooking fires. So be prepared to bring a portable stove or food that doesnt require cooking.

Brazos Bend State Park] is definitely your best bet, IMO.

Very "kid friendly". They have an observatory that conducts programs during the weekends. Very safe and easy roads for bicycling. Easy access lakes for fishing.

They even have some primitive cabins that can be rented if you prefer that over a tent for the first time out.

It really is one of the gems of our State Park system.
