This surprised me

New England Patriots release QB Cam Newton

But this didn't:

"The Dallas Cowboys culled their quarterback room on cut-down day.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported that Dallas waived quarterbacks Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci, per sources informed of the decision. The moves make Cooper Rush the backup to Dak Prescott in 2021. The Cowboys could bring one of the signal-callers back to the practice squad after they clear waivers."

I saw that earlier and this about Cam's release:

"FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- In a stunning move, the New England Patriots released veteran quarterback Cam Newton on Tuesday, turning things over to rookie Mac Jones as the starter, ESPN has confirmed.

"Coach Bill Belichick had said repeatedly that Newton was the team's starting quarterback but that he had to reestablish that position, or someone would have to play better than him. Jones has done that, in Belichick's view.

"Jones finished the preseason 36-of-52 for 389 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions, playing 107 snaps, easily the highest total among Patriots quarterbacks.

"Newton had started every preseason game but didn't play as much overall (39 snaps). He finished the preseason 14-of-21 for 162 yards, with one touchdown and one interception."

My take is that Cam was all about Cam and probably got crossways with Belichick. Belichick doesn't put up with players that have an "all about me" attitude.

All I know about Cam is that he was a turd in Juco and has done nothing since to change my view.
Should be a great pickup for the second only to Matt Millen of Lion's fame worst GM in NFL history.
Go get 'im, Jerrah! Lol

Would be funny to see the Pats invite him back to be on the scout team, and never reactivate him to be on the roster. Actually, it's better to just be done with him. The dude's a cancer, IMHO.
