Calling in Canada

I'm going to be in Canada for a week and plan on conducting some business while I'm there. That means I'll probably end up making quite a few calls to the U.S. from Canada. My cell phone rates are .49/minute - absurd. They don't have a plan that includes calls from Canada so I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas?

Any suggestions on a company? When I do searches on the web, I seem to get a lot of cheesy companies...

I'll be in Cardinal - I'll be able to see the U.S. from the porch of the house where we're staying, right across from the St. Lawrence River. Still, I don't want to bank on T-Mobile maybe picking up a U.S. signal. It's kind of a rural area.

any phone card that you can get in a walmart or walmart type store is fine. It's never been a problem for me in Canada or Europe.

Skype it is... I ordered a headset and I already have Skype loaded on my system. Screw T-Mobile and their .49 rate.
