Callaway Irons - X14? X16? Big Bertha?

Interested in a set of used callaways. I hit with Big Berthas maybe 5 or 6 years ago, and was wondering if anyone had any opinions about where they've gone since.

I'm playing 20 year old wilsons right now, so anything's going to be a step up...

Thoughts?

either one of those irons will improve your game significantly. i used to play forged blades, would never even look at those big hunks of iron but after playing them, they added 1.5 clubs in distance. the easiest clubs to hit there are i think.

Since it sounds like you are not just interested in Calloway, I would give the Ping G2s a demo. I hit just about everything 2 years ago and settled with the G2s.

I have the X-16s w/ stiff graphite shafts. Best set of irons ever and the easiest to hit. Heavy club head and very forgiving.

I'd have to agree with suttree on this one. If I could spend another $800 on golf crap and keep my marraige intact, I'd be playing Ping G2's.

I haven't hit the new Callaways yet but I hate the way they look. I've hit the Big Bertha 2004's and they're not bad, but man, they set up thick.

You might also give the Mizuno MX-23's a try. There is no better feeling than hitting a Mizuno forged iron on the sweet spot. It's just hard to do consistently, although the MX-23's were designed for hackers.

Thanks for the input so far. A couple of things. First of all, my cousin and uncle, both competetive amateur golfers, suggested I look at Callaway and Ping. My cousin also suggested Mizuno.

I want to get these things on ebay, where I've been watching prices, and think I should be able to score a set for around 500 bucks. I was scared away from Ping because of the whole dot color thing. Does that matter so much? Also, there aren't nearly as many Mizunos up there, so I just wasn't going to waste my time on 'em. I'm also not going to get forged clubs. I harbor no illusions - I'm a hacker, through and through.

I'll try and hit before I buy, but I'm a pretty lazy guy.

Now that Louisville lost, you might want to consider something from Academy.

Just go to the Ping website and fit yourself. All you have to do is measure some distances on your body and then you will know the correct lie angle and shaft length. Of course going to get a bona fide custom fit is better, but you can rough it out just with a tape measure and the website.

I played stock irons for years and then got custom fitted. Now I am playing with a 5 degree upright and 1.5" long shaft. It makes a big difference (and I am still getting used to it).

As I understand it, Ping uses that dot system because golf shops can't bend their irons like they can other manufacturer's clubs. Something about the metal they use. So they basically have to come from the factory in the lie you need.

I've been serious about golf for about two years and I haven't yet gotten myself fitted. This is probably to my detriment, but I don't feel like my swing is consistent enough yet to even get a proper fitting. I'm probably wrong, and I've been telling myself that I need to nut up and do it soon.

I was at a Ping demo day last year and I let the rep go through the fitting process. He had me in a maroon dot, which is the maximum upright dot they had - something like 4 or 5 degrees which my understanding would be for suttree/Kareem Abdul Jabbar types. Since I'm the very definition of average, I just wasn't buying it. I questioned the guy about it and he said that because of my grip, that's what I needed. Well, I looked and I had gotten my grip all screwed up, which I am prone to do. So I don't really understand when you get fitted how they know if your swing is "on" that day or what.

But I do need to do it because I have the absolute most beautiful set of Mizuno MP-30's sitting in my garage begging to be hit. Speaking of Mizuno, don't let the forging turn you off. The MX-23's are designed to be a forged version of a game improvement club. The MP-30's are too, just not nearly as much. The way I ended up with those 30's is that I was at another demo day, my swing was "on", and I was absolutely striping them on the sweet spot, time after time. You hit that sweet spot with a forged Mizuno and you will never be satisfied with anything else. Anyway, I couldn't stand it so I bought a set at lunch one day and was supposed to go back later and get fitted but I never did. I never have quite found that swing I had that day either. In retrospect, I should have gotten the MX-23's.

Another club you might consider is the Cobra SS-i's. I've got a used demo six iron and I love it. They're last year's model so they've been heavily discounted - I've seen them advertised for $299 and I'm sure you could do even better on e-bay. The head is huge but not in a thick Big Bertha kind of way.

I have a set of x-14's that I will sell you for about half what you were looking to spend. They are steel shaft, regripped last year, 3-PW. Best irons I have ever owned, but pops just bought me a set of x-16's so i better use those and not piss him off.

If you're a HACKER, then it doesn't matter which of those 3 you get as they are all forgiving. The best of those 3 would be the X-14 Pro Series. On eBay under search, enter X14 Pro LH. Or X 14 Pro LH

I've had the same X-12s since I was a sophomore in HS. LOVE them. Mine are men's steel shaft, but I have a hard swing for graphite and can't control the ball as well. I think the best clubs I ever hit were Callaways. I believe they were Big Bertha Tungsten clubs, but I don't remember the exact name because it was so long ago that I hit them.

i hate TM clubs

i have an x-12 1-iron that is like a hot knife through butter. the only thing about the irons that scares me is the "explosion" shot that happens sometimes. i thought about getting a set a few years ago and was just drilling this 7 iron on the range, probably about 170 or so, but sometimes i'd really catch one and it'd bomb to 190. that's unacceptable, at least to me, for short irons.

i have a set of the ping i3 blades and love them. the dots ARE important, but the clubs CAN be bent if you need them to be. (at least, they could a few years ago b/c i bent some myself) but just get fit the right way and you wont have to worry about it.

I go a set of X-12s back in 1999 (as a graduation present) and my game instantly changed, for the better. My iron play became much more consistent. I actually lost some distance but gained accuracy and height which allows me to land the ball on the greens better.
