California Schools

The kid is going to a water polo camp at Pepperdine (Terry Schroeder - US Olympic Coach) in late July. The kid probably won't have the grades to get into the better Cali schools, but he might want to go to school in California just before or after water polo camp. We'd like to visit a few schools within fairly close proximity to Pepperdine. It will probably be just us two males on this trip. Any suggestions on schools to go look at to get a taste of the area?

I can do the hardcore research myself, I'd like a few names to get me started. I haven't a clue.

OK Nick, assuming that you want to avoid the "run of the mill" cal state schools, you can go N to UC Santa Barbara and Westmont and on to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo if you wish.
CSU Channel Islands is a fairly new school located in Ventura (Between Pepperdyne and Santa Barbara).

Of course, there's UCLA and USC in Greater Los Angeles, with Loyola Marymount being there too. Occidental is located in LA City proper, out towards Pasadena.

Whittier College and Cal Poly Pomona (my alma mater) are a few miles SE of there. In the general neighborhood are the Claremont Colleges (Harvey Mudd, Claremont Mckenna, Pomona, PItzer, Scripps (women) and Claremont Graduate School). Also within a few miles is Univ. of La Verne.

About 50 miles E is U of Redlands.

If you want to head further south, there's not much (CS San Marcos) until you get to San Diego, where you will find San Diego St, UCSD, USD (Catholic), Pt. Loma Nazarine, and US International U.

There are also about 50 small church-based schools everywhere (Vanguard U, etc).

Let me know which direction you want to head and I will give you specific hotel/restaurant/sightseeing recommendations.

if he visits pepperdine, he's not going to want to go anywhere else. Cal Irvine, San Diego St. are two decent schools in nice locations.

puts me in the mind of the Camper Van Beethoven song (UC - Santa Cruz grads themselves)

----Baby, don't ya go, don't ya go to Goleta

I've been there and I've seen them drinkin' now
Thinkin' all the time that they're going to school
Well, maybe some day they might learn something
But being fascist rich kids just ain't cool

----Baby don't ya go, don't ya go into Westwood

I've been there and I've seen the styles they wear
Their haircuts down to their clean white shoes
Don't you know baby, that it's all a facade,ya know
Intelligence is not something you should avoid

----Baby don't ya go, don't ya go to La Jolla

I've been there and I've seen their attitude
They don't like folks who are not like them
Maybe someday they'll take a vacation,
like some flight over to Europe to take a nice cruise in the Mediterranean.............

Any of the University of California at _ schools are going to be fairly hard to get into. They are all really good schools, lots of them actually outrank UT.

Cal State schools are a lot easier to get into. Another option a lot of kids do here is go to Santa Monica Community College and transfer to UCLA. They have a really good relationship as far as transfers.
