Cable/DVR advice

I've never had DVR and so I'm a little confused. I'm moving out east next week and I'm going to be getting cable - probably through Comcast. They have an option for 13.95 extra a month to have DVR (for 6 months, then they seem to jack up the price). Is that the only way that I could get DVR? Would it be better to purchase a Tivo or something similar at Best Buy and if I did so, would it work with Comcast cable?

Also, if you record stuff on a DVR, is there some way to save it permanently on some other media device (CD/DVD - or even put it on my computer?)

Thanks in advance for any help.

There are stand alone dvd recorders that are pretty affordable now. That is high for a DVR though, at least compared to the ten bucks a month I pay (which is not introductory). Get Dish or DirectTV and I think they throw in the recorder box for free for six or so months. Their reg. price is surely not as high as what you listed that may be an intro.

Trust me, your life will change when you get DVR and for the better. You will wonder how you got along without one and what took you so long.

Tivo is great and has a better interface with bells and whstles. If you can be patient, wait for a special to come along that offers you lifetime service for a flat rate, usually about 300 bucks. In the long run it is well worth it and I wish I acted when it was just over 100 bucks a few years ago.

If prices were the same, Tivo.

I've got the HD DVR receiver from Dish Network. The DVR fee is only $6/mo and the receiver is considered the best DVR on the market.

I have a tivo and it works fine with comcast. i use it in conjuction with Comcasts digital cable box. However if you want to get an HD tivo you will need Comcast to provide you with a CABLE CARD because the HD tivo IS your tuner and only accepts the cable cards. The only drawback is that you do not get the ON Demand services that comcast provides. Nonetheless Tivo now has their own version of pay per view and the like.

Granted this is all from what i have read online myself. ( looking to upgrade to an HD tivo myself)

As for DVR, another vote for TIVO.
