Why would anyone in their right mind trust him with a lead in the 8th inning?

The guy threw 3 pitches. 3 pitches! And he still screwed up enough to warrant this thread.

I wouldn't bring him in unless we were protecting a 12 run lead in the 9th.

Nice brighter note - Rangers with 3 spot in 9th capped by Young's HR to CF. Tied at 7.

Good line-up by Wash tonight. Vizquel batting 2nd goes 2-4. Rests Ham and then PH him in 9th and drives in Kinsler even though it was FC. Holland comes in in 6th and shuts down Jays until the 9th.

I kind of think it was unfair to put that new kid in in the 11th. He wasn't even wearing his own uniform yet -- he was bound to feel rushed.

Too bad -- it would have been nice to win.

didn't see the game but glad the R's pulled it out. hope everyone had their own jersies and glad CJ got the win. Glad Wash still has confidence in him. He is certainly giving the kid the chance. Voodoo and all.

CJ backed into a win thanks to MY's 2-run bomb in 9th. Our hero walked a .116 hitter, threw a wild pitch, & gave up a single only to be saved from giving up a run on a badass play by Elvis. So he was prety much the usual CJ...

I'm not sure why they don't move him to more of a middle relief role when the Rangers either a) have a big lead or b) are down 5+ runs. At the very least, he' more likely to improve his confidence and ERA in those situations.

He's got the stuff when he's "on", but as one poster pointed out, how you can trust him to secure a lead in the 8th when he's pitching like this is beyond me...

Well lookie here...right back to the mound. As Josh said, Salty saved the inning by blocking several pitches in the dirt.

Time to give credit where it's due...C.J. for the month of May:

10 appearances, 9 IP, 3 saves, 0.00 ERA...dude still makes me nervous, but he's been getting it done lately...

But as I pointed out on the Rangers' Bats thread, this one should be on Ron Washington for leaving the lefty in to face the Mariners' hottest hitter, righty Franklin Gutierrez, with 2 on and 2 out in the eighth inning. Just dumb.

While you may want to avoid having your closer regularly come into the game in the eighth, last night begged for it.
