Pac-12 not expanding, BYU joining the Big 12 and more conference realignment

Coming to the Big 12?

Coming to the Big 12?

The last 24 hours have been eventful to say the least when it comes to the future of the Big 12 and conference realignment. Let's start with the bombshell: The Pac-12 isn't expanding.

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott issued a statement last night saying there are no plans for expansion, the west coast conference's presidents and chancellors want to remain a 12-team conference because they believe "it is in the best interests of our member institutions, student-athletes and fans."

"While we have great respect for all of the institutions that have contacted us, and certain expansion proposals were financially attractive, we have a strong conference structure and culture of equality that we are committed to preserve," Scott wrote. "With new landmark TV agreements and plans to launch our innovative television networks, we are going to focus solely on these great assets, our strong heritage and the bright future in front of us."

This came after Orangebloods.com reported that Missouri chancellor Brady Deaton was leading a serious effort to save the Big 12, and The Oklahoman reported that the University of Oklahoma had a list of demands to remain in the conference. Among those demands, the removal of Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe from power (the Sooners believe, and who could blame them, that Beebe answers solely to Texas). That apparently won't be a problem, according to Orangebloods.com, which reported that the nine-member conference has already notified Beebe that they "want a change in leadership."

The Sooners are also reportedly seeking reforms with the University of Texas' Longhorn Network (possibly no conference games on the network and no showing of high school sports).

ESPN, citing an AP report, is reporting that Texas and Oklahoma are scheduled to meet in the next few days to sort out the future, including an agreement to stay in the Big 12 for at least the next five years. ESPN also reported that the exodus to the Pac-12 was thwarted by Texas' unwillingness to share revenue equally.

Meanwhile, The Kansas City Star was reporting, according to a Mizzou booster, that the SEC had made an informal offer for Missouri to join that league. This report came on the heels of the Birmingham News reporting that the SEC and Missouri had "informally agreed that, barring new developments, the school will join the league and that Auburn University will move to the SEC East Division."

However, the SEC and Missouri both denied the reports.

MU's board of curators are scheduled to meet Thursday.

If the Big 12 does survive, BYU's Rivals site, Deep Shades of Blue, is reporting that the Cougars will become the tenth full member of the league. The report says BYU was slated to become the tenth member earlier this year but the latest turmoil put those plans on hold. However, BYU's athletic director reportedly has the go ahead to move BYU's sports to the Big 12. The moved could come within days, the report says.

However, Orangebloods.com's Chip Brown wrote on Twitter that a source is telling him that "its 'doubtful' BYU would want to join volatile B12 right now."

The only thing that is certain about the Big 12's future is Texas A&M won't be in it. But if the Big 12 is saved again — and Texas ans Oklahoma agree to stay for five years — then it's the best thing imaginable for the Forgotten Five (Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State and Baylor). This is all assuming that the conference adds measures for stability, like a huge buyout clause. This has t

In all seriousness, if we are stuck in this sucky conference with no hopes of joining the Pac 12 or the BIG anytime soon, then I think BYU would be a good addition. I was really impressed with how well BYU fans travelled to Austin.

"the Sooners believe, and who could blame them, that Beebe answers solely to Texas".

One more time, wasn't Beebe OU's choice?

Random thoughts. If we insist on staying in the B12, then let's make it 12 again. Possibly even 14.

I personally think the B12 should hesitate on BYU. The conference should add from the central time zone to the eastern time zone. If BYU is added, you're adding mountain time, and you've got to go east because that's where the relatively worthy available schools are.

If the B12 does add BYU, whatever (I'm also not fond of their silly "no games on Sunday" rule, and other religious baggage). But they'll reliably draw between 55 and 60 per game, and bring in the State of Utah. If they want to join this leaky ship, then let'um, I guess. They just need to know that they may wind up playing conference games as far away as the eastern time zone. At 10.

I wouldn't much care about distance for the right schools if they are in the east. Take one of the Florida directional schools. If the SEC is invading Texas, the B12 needs to invade the SEC. Especially the State of Florida. Hello, Scarlett Knights or Panthers or Bulls. At 11.

If it's me, I take a run at Rutgers (and NYC). Doubt they come, but I talk to them. At 12, if they come. And if Rutgers wants a regional partner? I don't hesitate. I try to add Connecticut. That's right, CN. This would cause me to go to 14, but I try to nail the NYC market. This one might not last long if they come, but you never know. The ACC might then add both, but until they do, they're worth a try. NYC's just sitting there naked.

Pickin's get slim now. West Virginia probably goes SEC to balance the aggy. There's a couple of unattractive city schools out there like Louisville and Cincinnati. I don't know if the city schools are worth it or not. If Rutgers comes, maybe a city school so there's a school in between MO and the northeast. Or maybe Air Force (so long as they understand they may be conference members with schools from the eastern time zone).

Probably you stay at 12. A Florida directional school, and hopefully Rutgers and Connecticut (or BYU, Air Force, or a city school like Louisville).

It would be a mistake to add any Texas schools. We need to expand the B12 footprint, not keep it the same. A school like Boise State is so small and so far away that it only adds costs, brings in zero money, and does not possess enough marginal luster.

Let ND stay independent, if they want to, but see if they join for non-football affiliation since the Big East is basically gone. Probably they wouldn't join the B12 outright. If they affiliated, maybe you get ND football in 30 years or something.

This would essentially be a Texas/OU league. I like BYU's idea of no exit penalty. Then, as teams come and go, we can just plug in replacements as needed. Of course, those replacements fall to less and less quality.

Put Texas on one side and OU on the other side. Steal the "protected crossover game" idea from the B1G, and now the RRR goes on as always. Yet, neither Texas or OU is necessarily out of it if they lose the RRR.

OTOH, judging from Dodds' comments today, it looks like we'll add one and play with 10. How we can pass on a high-profile championship game, I don't know.

Beyond Texas/OU, it won't be a particularly sexy league, but it would let us develop the LHN and stay "king of the conference," which seems to be a big deal, judging from Dodds' comments today.

Leadership will someday change at Texas. If, at that time, Texas and OU are doing well in the B12, you just go on. If we have bled market share, perhaps that future leadership will have different ideas as to conference affiliation and revenue sharing.

In a world that does not have a playoff, being in the Big 9 version of the Big 12 is preferable to the Pac 16. I hope the Big 12 sticks together, at least in the short term. i think 5 12 team conferences are preferable to 4 16 team conferences.

We could add Boise, BYU and one of Louisville, Houston, TCU and have 12 again. I think OU/UT/MU are better off together than apart. UT/OU could be a big dog in a big league and will have their pick if/when the conferences expand.

MU will NOT be a big dog in the SEC. They'd be Ole Miss, just like Aggy is going to be. They're smart to stick. If they get an offer from the Big 10, they should take it. They may be the school kept on the chain by the Big 10 if/when Notre Dame becomes interested to come in with then.

If Chip Brown says BYU is NOT joining the Big 12, look for announcement that they're coming any minute. Everything he reports is wrong. He was wrong multiple times on last year's coaching searches, he was wrong last year about the move to the PAC 12, he was wrong about the imminent move to the ACC. Seriously -- has he been right about anything? Who are his sources? Bobby Burton and others at Texas 24/7 seem to be the only ones practicing real journalism. The others are just making crap up and running on innuendo and rumors.

Yup, I'm with OUBubba. Looks like its a Texas-OU thing to me.

So let's just dominate this damn league.

I like my additions upthread better than Bubba's, but at this point, whatever.

You need to get your OU network up and running, Bubba. Tell you what: You subscribe to mine and I'll subscribe to yours. How's that for conference comity?

Seriously, folks, I have a feeling that Texas is ahead of the curve on the LHN. In 20 years, a different arrangement with respect to Tier 3 sharing may be the standard model, especially as legislatures across the land want to pretend they have no money.

I just hope our new commissioner makes a run at NYC. Rutgers and CN are downright desperate right now. Take 'um in, if you can, and plant the Longhorn flag in NYC.

If you happen to go to 16 somehow, do the pod trick for excellent conference interaction.

In order to get BYU, we will need harsher departure penalties (they were insufficient to keep aTm from bolting a 10 year deal before the ink was dry), which probably means $100M exit penalties and agreed injunctions.

Then, once we are lashed inextricably to a mediocre conference that pays out about 1/3 of what the Pac 12 pays ($35M for every team vs. $21M for UT and $14M for Baylor), we will be able to attract such luminaries as UH or Air Force or TCU or Louisville.

In short, good luck getting a MNC invite if a team from a real conference has the same record. We are now in the Big East, assuming OU doesn't say to hell with us and bolts for the SEC.

Sweet.

You have to remember that teams wanting to take a Texas team into it's league wants to play away games in Texas as much as possible. A TCU or Houston does nothing for Texas or Oklahoma but it does great things for a BYU or ND. Playing away games in Texas is one of the offers that entices other schools.

Remember that kids want to play in front of their families and friends and if that kid that went to ND is from Texas as many games a year they can play in Texas the better.

BYU as a replacement for A&M is fine with me. The BYU fans attend the games and put eyeballs to TVs.

The BYU network is in place and serves a nationwide fan base.

The only other additions to the Big 12 that I would be excited about are ND and Boise State but they are probably better candidates for OOC and T day games.

Pac-12 decides to stay at 12 (not add OU or anyone else) ---> OU re-commits to the Big 12 ---> BYU enters the Big 12 (OU re-committing to the Big 12 was their condition for entering), and the Big 12 is back to ten and isn't dead. Simple as that.

This is getting ridiculous! Deny, deny, deny... Everybody is posturing. We are happy and have no plans to change until we all of the sudden decide to change. This is the pretty much the standard answer from all camps.
