Yah, last night was non-conference, but it was still good times.
My two favorite shots of the night were wily put-a-ways by Destinee and Elizabeth.
Destinee did that shot again where she soars up out of the back row, hovers, and then savvy’s a shot into the front corner, way up in zone 4. I first saw that shot against K-State; looks like it is a permanent part of the arsenal. That thing goes down every time, this one for the night’s first set point.
Elizabeth Graham has some banged up digits but saw playing time nonetheless, and late in the 3rd set, she also displayed her craftiness. She was confronted with a big block, so she said, shoot, I’ll try some sleight-of-hand, even with all this tape, and deftly screwballed some Mizuno into the same front corner, Destinee-style. Point texas, time out Cougars, but Liz said, don’t get over-zealous on the high fives, homies.
Juliann eschewed finesse and stayed violent. She probably teased her team-mates, saying, “You sissies can slime-shot all night, I’m sticking with power.” She put down some of her trademark bone-crushing spikes, going .389.
Some other highlights:
* Elizabeth scored back-to-back points to close out the 2nd set with a block and a nice spike, and later closed out the match off an Engle set.
* Kiley singed Cougars with three aces.
* Sydney seems to sometimes have ESP about where the ball is going. She’s coming along as a good back-row buddy for Heather, who still lays out for a get like nobody’s business.
* Amber’s off the bench play.
Amber appears to be a hi-potential frosh. She’s like a cross between Brandy Magee and Destinee. She’s got Brandy’s smooth as silk athleticism, but she’s quicker and more agile like Destinee. I think she’s gonna be really good.
Ashley had a few beautiful sets. She pulled off one particularly tricky set on an out of system ball. She somehow torqued her body up and around into a feasible position for jump-setting and lofted a beauty, and I just said, Shizzle! Look at that!
She put a ball out for Elizabeth on the slide, and Elizabeth muscled it down, but said, shoot, she’s used to setting those six-five leapers, Lauren and Jenn, I better figure out how to spring a little higher.
Taking stock mid-season here, check out these stats.
* Lauren is hitting a ridiculous .486. No one else in the Big XII comes close – Jordan Larson is at .259 - hah! - and nationally, Akinradewo, who everybody worships, is hitting .458. Nicole Fawcett is at .411 and Megan Hodge is at .302. Only Harmotto is higher at .522.
* Destinee is #1 in the Big XII at 4.22 k/g and 5.06 p/g. Those numbers top everybody at Stanford, Nebraska and Penn State.
* As a team, the Horns hit .344. That tops Stanford’s .316 and Nebraska’s .275. Only Penn State tops them at .395.
Those numbers mean our frosh setter is doing pretty dang well. It also means we have all the offensive firepower we need to go very deep into the playoffs. When we have clean, disciplined ball control, and work hard on the block, we rock.
The second half is gonna be great!
See you next week, when the bulbous Restrepo come to Austin for his annual high colonic!
