Bye Bye Chris

Sorry TA. But, after Moreland looked so damn comfortable at the plate tonight I think it made the decision much easier. I had been wondering who would go down with the addition of Cantu. But, it looks like he and Moreland will platoon at 1st with Arias and Blanco alternating at 2nd until Kinsler gets back.

The Link

They'll have a whole another decision(s) with Harden and Holland getting ready to return. GREAT problems to have...FOR ONCE!!

P.S: I hope Chris get's his s together and arrives at Spring Training ready to earn the spot...again.

although the Rangers likely have sewn up the west, this trade ends my dream of a world series champ in arlington

Just my opinion here....with the other bats we have, we can get away with Chris at 1b...yes Moreland looked ok tonight but keep in mind he was hitting .280 at OKC...Davis was way over .300 IIRC..

chances are moreland falls back to earth at the plate, and and that failure to scoop arias' throw early in the game worries me-- that was a routine play for chris...that kind of defense in a close game kills teams

in any event it sounds like daniels wants cantu at 1b as much as possible (pregame on 105.5)....the prospect of a .260 1rst baseman replacing the 2nd or 3rd best defensive 1b doesn't make much sense

I may be wrong here, but the playoffs are now a month long ordeal...every bat goes cold in a month...but dominant pitching, defense and speed are consistent...i think in mid oct we'll look at this change as a killer for us....yet another ranger team flames out due to the imaginary need for "offense", when we've cruised to a 9 game lead with pitching and defense

ok, that's my buzz kill==== i'll shut up from here on

H2R,

There's nothing wrong with what you said. Afterall, "Defense wins championships." It's just that baseball teams do not include 1B's that have to hit 9th. Davis was an outstanding defensive 1B. But, he's got to produce at the plate.

So, you compromise some defense with Cantu, and you add to the offense with him. Maybe it's a push, but maybe you get a little addition...like 70 points in offense. Chris was an absolute buzz kill when he came to the plate.

As with most things in life...it comes down to numbers. Let's hope for all of us, this is the right thing.

you're probably right H69, but I guess i'm going back to my beisbol roots of the 60s...the dodgers and cards were the dominant force then, neither had to rely on a 1b to produce at the plate.. white and parker were great fielders...and the a's of the 70s had some spares at 1b (epstein, for one)...those teams won with defense, pitching, and power-- which chris has the potential to excel at

i do see a shift in priorities in mlb back to defense and ptching being king....a few no hitters and perfect games the past 12 months...chris is going to be someone's diamond in the rough...at age 24 he's got a lot of potential at the plate, and is a defensive star right now

one last thing, it's something that i just read on newberg's site...what if moreland had to face cahill tonight, and davis got to face the pitching tonite that gave up 14 hits?? Would Moreland have looked like a fool vs a great pitcher (like chris and everyone else did)?? would chris have had another 3 hit nite vs the sub par pitching we saw tonite??

Moreland had the look of a guy that can only pull pitches...hope i'm wrong, but that's what his approach appears to suggest

ok, last of the negative stuff from me...go Rangers

H2R, I don't think this is the end of the 1B battles. And it's not the end of Chris Davis. I hope he somehow gets his hitting touch back and we see him back here some day. He was starting to at least make contact. That was a good point about if games had been reversed on who's facing Cahill.

There's nothing I like better than a great defensive 1B. I always liked Palmeiro and Will Clark. And, I loved Bill White and the Cardinals back in the 60's...and Willie McCovey when he played for the Dallas Eagles.

Well this is bad news for some pitchers in AAA. Chris has a hole in his swing that seems to get better when he goes to Tulsa or Oklahoma City. Time sometimes takes care of these things. When Adrian Gonzales, Travis Hafner and Carlos Pena were Rangers, I didn't expect much of them and now a couple of those guys are all stars.

What about the first baseman (don't know his name) that we picked up after the trade - and sent one of the minor league pitchers for him?

PFD -- I think I knew that. I've been to the stadium in Frisco. Useless information stored in my brain keeps popping up at inconvenient times.
