buying western boots

I'm thinking about buying some lizard boots. Tony Lama is what I have always had in the past. Are there any other boot makers in the $350 price range that I should consider?

Justin makes some nice boots but their selection of sizes is way too limited. I wear a EE width and can almost never seem to find them. The ones I have found have a really good fit. Luchese offers some extremely nice boots but you will pay for them.

One of the bst pairs of boot I hav ever owned I bought from a bootmaker in Acuna. They were a low heel roper style made from calf shoulder. Those boots have lasted me for nearly 15 years an dstill lok pertty good. The bootmaker is no longer there though and I cant read the name inside anymore. But my point is that Mexico is a good place to look for boots too.

My burnt orange Tony Lama fulll-quill ostrich boots are great - soft leather and after 4 years still look brand new with a polish.

Step it up and get Lucchese (and not the Lucchese 2000 ****, get the handmade ones). In the long run you get your money back.

How about these Lucchese's?

Just bought some Tony Llama Full Quill Ostrich Boots for $300 at Shepherds in Austin which was a great deal since they usually are quite a bit more that Lizard Boots.

Also noticed that Shepherds had a better selection and MUCH better prices (seemed about $100 cheaper across the board on a pair of boots).

Justin seems to make the cheapesty decent quality Lizard boot, but I only found them in the Roper style which might make a difference (it did for me).

Anyways just my thoughts.

I'm glad this thread was started.

I bought a pair of plain leather boots from Abraham Rios of Raymondville in 1973 and lost them when we moved to Houston.

Those were classic, handmades but I just want to find the least expensive pair of plain cowhide boots I can...I know: you get what you pay for.

Lizard's look nice, but can get torn up pretty easily. If it were me, I'd go with the burnt orange ostrich. Look good, and are very tough leather.

Besides, the way they make the full-quill leather really pisses off the animal rights people, which I get a kick out of....

suttree,

You a Cormac McCarthy fan?

I just like lizard better than full-quil ostrich. I only plan to wear the lizard to work - I have Redwings to wear at the ranch and hunting and for getting drunk and spilling beer on.

I bought a pair of Justins last August. Worst boots i have ever owned. Within 2 months they developed a hole in the inner lining at the heel. As it rubbed against my foot, this hole has eaten through my socks and my foot. I have been walking with a noticeable limp lately. Today I finally said **** it. I am buying new boots and, for the first time ever, writing a letter to Justins to complain. Less than 6 months and these pieces of **** are unwearable.

I looked online and saw a pair of Lucchese-classics goatskin ropers. Thoughts? Note: I do not like western-style boots (as distinct from ropers). They looked nice. Unless someone has horror stories about them, I think i will see if Sheplers has some.

I bought a pair of Double H's from Bootown. Not sure if I got ripped from the brand or the price. I spent 200 dollars. But they still look and feel like new.
Anyone heard of the Double H brand?

On a side note, maintenance wise, I have had great luck at Capital Saddlery on Lavaca. I wear my boots everyday and have had them resoled and cleaned/polished there a couple of times. A little pricey but awesome work.

If you have a funny shaped foot in any way get some customs made. I hardly have arches and my foot is narrow to boot (ha) so boots always hurt my feet until I got a pair of Leddy's made. Glossy elephant, $600 and I still wear them today, 20 plus years later (many times resoled).

Obviously everyone will agree that Lucchese is the best pair of boots that you'll be able to buy off the shelf. But, they are much more expensive than a Justin or Tony L boot...so if you don't plan on wearing them that often it might not be the best buy. I own four pairs of Justins right now, and have worn them every day for years: full quill ostrich, elephant, just plain ol leather, and a pair of sea turtle that my dad bought about thirty years ago and gave me. I've had a lot of luck with Justin boots as far as durability goes and would reccomend them for your price range. If you want to spend more, go Lucchese.
