Buying new leather furniture

Okay, so I'm closing on my first home this Friday and I need some more furniture. We want some leather living furniture and so I've gone to all these different furniture stores but I have no idea what brands are good quality, if I should steer away from "factory direct" stores and I'm generally suspicious of furniture sales people.

So, Hornfans, give me some recs on getting some nice leather furniture. Should only care about the comfort and feel of the leather? What about places like Sofamart that sell their own brand but say it's Natuzzi leather and such. I've looked for reviews on furniture but most of the reviews are about service, not quality.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

(and no, I'm not opening a line of credit on furniture before closing)

With buying leather furniture, just be prepared to get ripped off no matter what....the markup is flat out highway robbery.

With that said, you pretty much get what you pay for in leather furniture. If you shop around enough and go into the high end furniture stores, you should be able to see and feel the difference between the cheap crap and good stuff.

Search the net on how to buy leather furniture.

Overstock seems to have some nice stuff. I just don't know that I could bring myself to spend over $2000 on a leather sofa without sitting on it first.

Are you in Austin?

There's a nice guy, family business, at the SE corner of Burnet and Anderson. We got a sweet deal there last Thanksgiving. Both of our living room sofas are leather, and with kids it was a great investment. they take a lot of abuse and stay nice. real easy to clean...

Buying new furniture is almost always a ripoff, but here's a tip- go to a place like Bassett that sells semi-custom, build to order furniture and see if they have floor demos for sale. We got our very nice leather couch and loveseat for $1100, and they would have cost us about $4500 had we ordered them.

watch the paper for furniture at dillards and stuff. they have a smaller selection than superstores, but generally have very good quality. we've been real happy with the barnhart (sp?) wrap around sectional we got.

by all means, stay clear of rooms-to-go...mostly crap imo.

We bought our furniture at Star. We bought a leather sofa and a matching leather loveseat. I cannot remember the manufacturer but it was good stuff.

We are now looking for a leather chair that we want to put in our sunroom. I think we are going to look at Macy's and Bassett and Star....

Check with Four Hands in Austin to see when their next warehouse sale is happening. You can get some steals on leather furniture and all kinds of other stuff.

First home, eh? I'm guessing you're not in the price category for Ekornes Stressless line. When you do get there, it's highly worth it.

Have to agree with K-Man on this one.

We bought from that store 3-4 years ago and our couch and chair are still going strong, even with dogs scratching on them all the time. I think our brand is Flexsteel. They even let us take home a full size hide to see if that's what we wanted. Good guys.

I've had good luck at Skandinavia. The other Scandinavian place (blanking on the name) that is next to the unfinished furniture place on Burnet near Anderson is nice, also.
