Buying boots

I'm planning on buying a pair of ostrich boots ($300-$450 range) in the near future but know next to nothing about quality boots. Is there anything obvious that I need to make sure I look for other than how well they fit?

i got a pair of Tony Llama full-quill ostrich boots & i love them. comfortable, tough as nails, & they look great. they cost me about $400 @ Cavender's in houston @ Kirby & 610

I've had a pair of full quill Justin's that I have had for about 7 years and they still look great. If you call around or check the paper, you can find full quill on sale for less than $400. The Luchesse's are awesome, but I was young and poor 7 years ago.

On a side note, where in Austin should I take my boots to get re-healed and and cleaned up?

Obviously if you want the best you go with custom boots, then Lucchese. However, neither will fall within that price range. I've had a pair of Justin full quill for about 7 years that I bought for $360. They've been resoled twice and still look great. As with anything, the key is proper maintenance.

He didn't say that he wanted full quill ostrich. I just ordered smooth ostrich, roper style Lucchese Classics (hand made) for $375 through Cavanders. They were a little more than regular price because I special ordered a certain color.

I wear my boots everyday and I think that full quill, for that purpose is a little to gaudy. I like the subtle look of smooth ostrich.

These boots but in brown.

Nice boots Z. I love the full quill look, but smooth o's are really nice also. Anybody seen anteater boots? They cost well over a $1000 but are real sweet.

get a pair of custom made- they will cost double but the joy is worth it. since you are buying ostrich they are probably for dressing up right? Why not design your own pair? for a suggestion I have brown-burnt orange color on the bottom then a bone color up top, sublte green yellow brown stiching with an orange border- always wanted to put a longhorn in the middle

I need lacers since my ankle swells since my surgery-- I've gone thru a couple of pairs of Justins work boot sytle over the last 7 yrs

How much would work style lacers run in shark or bull hide?

My dad had a pair of anteater when I was younger. They were his 'Sunday' boots. His looked something like this.

for lucchese smooth ostrich at cavenders. they had justin for smooth for $169. the full quill was $329 for justin and $399 for lucchese.

do not buy tony lama...ever.

it makes a huge difference. the better leather is softer and will last a lot longer than regular hide

Lucchese Classic full quill ostrich ropers at Cavenders are $599. Smooth ostrich in roper style are $299. Full quill ostrich western boots are $699. These are prices off of Cavenders website for Lucchese Classics.

Justin full quill "Roper style" here.

Also, fill the bath tub with water, fill the inside of the boot with water and let them sit in the bath tub submerged for an hour. Take out (pour water out) and put on feet. Wear all day (8 hours) or at least until fully dry. The leather will contour to your feet and you will have the best fitting pair of boots ever.
