Buying a King Size Bed

Want to buy one today, and wanted input/thoughts mostly around price and bargains.
I'm not sure what type of bed I want to buy brand-wise, but it seems like a good bed is ~$1700 with out boxspring, another $600 with boxspring.

How much markup does a place like Sleepy's put on a bed? What percentage of the listed price can I expect to cut?
Does it matter that I'm buying on the last day of the month?
Anything else?

Last day of the month won't matter.

Are you talking about only buying mattress/box spring? Or whole bed.

If you are buying the whole setup, I'd check craigslist for the headboard/footboard/frame and shop for the mattress/ box spring at a mattress shop.

Sorry, just a mattress (probably). We would likely buy a bed frame so we'd rather do w/out the box spring but when the wife went to talk to sleepys yesterday, they said that you need a flat board, rather than just slats, to put the mattress on.

My wife and I thought it would be a good idea to get a bed with memory foam on top. Worst decision ever. It is too hot and it creates lumps in the bed. If you need the cushion get a traditional pillow top instead.

Sterns & Foster is the brand I like the best.

If you're in Austin, definitely go to ATX Mattress, (ATX Furniture) on Oltorf between south 1st and Lamar. They do close-outs and have by FAR the best prices in town. Last fall we bought a king size sealy postropedic w/ a pillow top for 700, including box springs.

spent about $1500 at Haverty's for a stearns & foster king set about 3 yrs ago ... it now has ruts on both sides and a "hill" in the middle, but the ruts are not deep enough to replace according to the warranty inspector.
