Buy a new IMac now or wait for the Snow Leopard ?

I was going to invest in a new iMac but i heard the new OS "snow leopard" would be out next year sometime. I was worried if I bought now that I would not be able to upgrade to the new interface that runs on the intel processor. Does anyone know:
1) When the new one will come out and
2) Is it worth waiting?

Thanks

Get it. It's completely upgradeable. And Steve says that Snow Leopard will be primarily a quality and performance focused release. Not necessarily much in the way of new features. It's Apple's way of putting more distance between them and MS while MS is getting battered for quality.

Well, obviously, Mobile Me has some bugs and Apple is working through it to get it fixed. They don't screw up very often, but on this one they did. Steve admitted as much today and reorganized the internet software teams all under one manager. Mine has been pretty stable all along, but a few others haven't been so lucky. There is a special tech support chat line you can jump on to help you through Mobile Me issues so give that a try. On the whole, Mobile Me should end up being a great service, but it's definitely a little buggy at the moment.

It won't exactly be a "service pack." They're working on a lot of under-the-hood technologies to establish a good foundation for the future. Although there won't be a lot of user-end features added in. Personally, I'm sorta glad to see them focus on just the performance and optimization of the OS. I haven't had many issues with Leopard, but if they can make it even faster and more efficient I'm all for it.

To the original poster, Leopard now currently runs fine on Intel machines. Snow Leopard will possibly be Intel-only, but that doesn't make Leopard incompatible. I have three Intel Macs and run Leopard on both of them quite well. My wife's computer is a 24" iMac we bought this year.

I know Xminus, it was tongue-in-cheek. But seriously, unless they are going to give away the software upgrade for free or close to, than I don't really see the appeal to the average joe Mac user. That ain't gonna fly at $100.

I agree. I'm not sure how they'll price it. I'm not too keen on it if it's $129 like most updates. I'd probably still buy it because I'm a ***** like that, but hopefully it'll be priced more reasonably. I guess we'll see.

Sure. If it's an Intel machine I don't see why not. But you might also be better served to just wait now until Snow Leopard comes out next year since you obviously aren't in desperate need of the features of Leopard.

Jeez Pickles, you just can't let a Mac thread go by without defending MS huh? The service packs of Windows haven't introduced new features like Expose or Dashboard Widgets. That took a whole change from XP to Vista. They're not exactly comparable.
